The Citadel proves to be too much for Davidson

Charleston, S.C. -- The Citadel grapplers won eight of the ten matches during Tuesday night's dual against Davidson in McAlister Field House. Four Cadets recorded major decisions including Anthony Easter, Keith Koziel, Brendan Prince and Darius Caldwell. With the win, The Citadel improves to 5-7 (2-3 SoCon) in dual meet action, while Davidson falls to 1-11 (0-5 SoCon).

Sophomore Tyler Sim started the Bulldogs off with an exciting match at 125 pounds. Sim took down Davidson's Ben Altman three times in the second and third periods to come back from an early 0-3 deficit. With nearly two minutes riding time, Sim took the victory 7-5 putting the Bulldogs on the board 3-0.

Besting his opponent by 12 point was Junior Anthony Easter. The 133-pound grappler paced the match recording his second major decision of the season. The 13-1 victory improved Easter to 3-2 in Southern Conference action.

Redshirt sophomore Mike Fenton stepped in for the Cadets at 141 pounds but was defeated by the Wildcats Vitaly Radsky despite a third period surge.

Derek Royster shut out his opponent in the 149-pound bout 6-0. The redshirt freshman scored the only two offensive points in his bout with Carl Sandercock. The decision gave the Bulldogs a 10-3 early lead.

A pair of true freshman had two of the most commanding victories of the night. At 157 pounds Keith Koziel defeated the Wildcats' Joe McGinley 11-1 recording three takedowns and accumulating over five and a half minutes of riding time. In the 165-pound bout Brendan Prince matched Koziel's three takedowns and racked up almost five minutes of riding time en route to a 12-1 victory over the Wildcats' Kevin Cook. The two major decisions boosted the Dogs lead to 18-3 over Davidson.

One of the closest matches of the might came at the 174-pound match-up. Trebor Clavette of Davidson took the early 6-3, but The Citadel's Derek Sickel mounted a comeback racking up five points to Clavette's three. The surge was not enough though as Sickel fell to his SoCon foe 8-9.

Redshirt senior Darius Caldwell was one of the four seniors recognized during senior night. Caldwell shut out Davidson's Sam O'Hair in the final two periods to take the 10-1 victory. The major decision added four points to the board for the Bulldogs giving them an insurmountable lead going into the final two bouts.

True freshman Cyrus Edelson made his dual meet debut for the Bulldogs as he took a forfeit at the 197-pound weight class.

Also recognized during the senior night match was Aaron Brown. Brown closed out the dual with a tight match in the heavyweight division. Both Brown and Davidson's' Charlie Wolff recorded escapes during the bout, but the Cadet's second period penalty point was enough to grant him the win and finish the dual off 31-6.

The Bulldogs will travel to Chapel Hill on Feb. 23 for a tri-match with North Carolina and Dequesne and will close out their dual meet season at Gardner Webb on Feb. 27. For complete coverage of Bulldog Wrestling, visit the official home of The Citadel Athletics at www.CitadelSports.com.
