The coaching carousel is a hypothetical action where, once one door closes, another one opens. Usually, school A hires a coach from school B, who now has a vacancy, and turns to someone from school C. Round and round the carousel goes all spring and summer and even into the fall.
The carousel tends to have its ebbs and its flows. There may be no action for a week and then that crucial domino falls and creates a spark that leads to multiple hirings and vacancies. This has been the case for the last week.
Our last coaching update centered around a pair of hires by Kent State (Fred Garcia and Devin Schroder). That means that there is now a head coaching and assistant coaching vacancy at Binghamton - Garcia’s previous home. Schroder came to Kent State via Wyoming.
Wyoming didn’t take long to announce a replacement for Schroder; they’ve added Josh Heil to the Cowboy staff. Heil spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Campbell. During his three years in Buies Creek, Heil helped eight wrestlers earn NCAA qualifying bids, including one All-American. The Camels also claimed one SoCon title during his time on the bench.
Heil also wrestled at Campbell and qualified for the NCAA Tournament on five occasions. He made the SoCon finals every year he competed, winning three times. During the 2020 season, Heil was named a first-team All-American by the NWCA after the NCAA Championships were cancelled. That year was one of two in which he earned top-eight seeds for the tournament.
With Heil leaving Campbell, they now have a pair of openings for assistants. This comes after assistant coach TJ Dudley was elevated to become the program’s head coach on Sunday.
Today, we’ve seen Lock Haven announce their latest hire - 3x NCAA All-American Brock Mauller. Mauller was a three-time MAC champion during his career at Missouri. He got on the NCAA podium as a true freshman with a sixth-place finish at the 149 lb weight class. As a sophomore, Mauller was also named a first-team All-American. He then finished fifth and seventh at nationals in the years that followed.
Mauller started his coaching career midway through the 2024-25 season as he was hired by Northern Colorado. Of course, with him moving on to Lock Haven, that will open a spot on Teyon Ware’s first staff at UNC.
Lock Haven had an opening because 2018 NCAA runner-up Ronnie Perry has stepped away from his position with the Bald Eagles. We’ll see if he fills one of the positions available below.
We’ve re-added Lehigh to the list of opening positions. In June, Sammy Sasso was hired by the school as an assistant. His recent arrest seemed to put that hiring in jeopardy. The school had Sasso listed on the website as a coach at the time of the arrest, but since then, he’s been removed.
