"We're very happy," commented Stanford head coach Kerry McCoy after the dual. "This was a very good way to start the Pac-10 season, and now we have to get ready for Fullerton on Monday."
The Cardinal started the night with six straight wins, including two pins to mount a 24-0 lead. In each of the seven Stanford victories tonight, the Cardinal wrestler came out strong, scoring the first takedown of the bout.
The match started at 149 pounds, where Stanford sophomore Josh Zupancic captured a 10-4 victory over Bakersfield's Brandon Doyle. Scott Loescher was the next Cardinal wrestler on the mat, but he did not stay out for very long, pinning Daniel Atondo at the 2:20 mark.
Next up were Ray Blake and Brian Busby at 165 pounds. Busby, the fourth-ranked wrestler in the Pac-10 was looking to defend his spot against Blake, the fifth-ranked wrestler in the conference. But the Cardinal co-captain wanted to win his 31st match of the year tonight and scored three takedowns and captured riding time to earn the 7-5 victory.
At 174 pounds, Luke Feist took an early lead over Garth Wara, but the Runners knotted the bout at 2-2 in the second period. Feist chose to start the third period on bottom and quickly escaped to take a 3-2 lead with riding time still in his favor. Feist added a takedown and secured the 6-2 victory.
Stanford co-captain Ryan Hagen kept the Cardinal momentum alive, winning his first dual match of the year after an early season injury delayed his training. Hagen scored early in the first and picked up back points to take a 4-0 lead and build over two and a half minutes of riding time. He started the second period on top and rode Brandon Ceremello long enough to guarantee his bonus point. In the third period, Hagen added an escape and captured a 6-3 victory.
At 197 pounds, junior Ian Bork built up a 7-1 lead in the first period and then started on top in the second. Bakersfield's Ryan Bergman picked up a reversal, but Bork did not relent and scored a reversal of his own en route to pinning Bergman at the 4:44 mark.
The Roadrunners got their first win of the night at heavyweight, as Eric Parker notched his 19th win of the season, but Stanford rebounded with a 7-1 decision from ninth-ranked Tanner Gardner at 125 pounds. The win is the 25th of the season for Gardner, and the sophomore improves to 6-1 on the year in dual matches. Bakersfield ended the night with a pair of wins at 133 and 141.
Stanford will be back on the mat in three days, as the Cardinal hosts Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. on Monday night in Burnham Pavilion.
