    Stanford holds off Duke comeback

STANFORD, Calif. -- Duke's Conner Hartmann and Mitch Finesilver remained unbeaten in dual action this afternoon as the Blue Devils fell to No. 16 Stanford, 27-15. Duke rallied to within five after falling behind 17-6 midway through the match, but the Cardinal was able to hold off the Blue Devils' comeback.

Duke falls to 1-5 with three of the setbacks coming to top 20 opponents. Stanford improves to 7-2 overall.

Hartmann got the Blue Devils off to a fast start at 197 pounds. The redshirt senior, ranked fifth nationally and undefeated in duals, dominated the first period and built his riding time. He picked up right where he left off in the second and finally was able to turn Michael Sojka for the pin in 4:36 and a 6-0 lead for Duke.

Stanford picked up four straight victories for the Cardinal to go ahead 16-10 heading into the 149-pound match. Nathan Butler put Stanford on the board with a major decision at heavyweight and the Cardinal added six more points due to a forfeit at 125.

After the Cardinal garnered a decision and major decision from a pair of top 20 wrestlers at 133 and 141, the Blue Devils narrowed the gap to 17-9 with a 7-6 decision from Finesilver at 149 pounds. Finesilver and Paul Fox battled evenly throughout the match as the two headed into the final period knotted at 5-5.

Fox escaped to start the third, but Finesilver scored a takedown for the 7-6 lead and ended up winning by injury default for six more points for the Blue Devils. The redshirt freshman is unbeaten, 6-0, in duals and 17-5 overall on the year.

Stanford extended its lead back to eight, 20-12, to set up arguably the most anticipated match of the afternoon between Duke's 17th-ranked Jake Faust and No. 12 Jim Wilson. In two previous meetings, Faust has won by decision handing Wilson two of his four losses on the year.

This afternoon proved to be no different as Faust built a 4-2 first-period lead and extended it to 7-2 after five minutes of wrestling. The redshirt junior added two more points and never let Wilson get within striking distance of a win. Faust is 10-4 on the year and 3-0 against top 20 wrestlers with all three of those coming against Wilson.

Trailing 20-15 with two matches remaining, Duke was in search of wins at 174 and 184 to upset the No. 16 Cardinal. At 174, Peter Galli went up early and used a big second period to ice the victory for Stanford with a 10-2 decision over Duke's Alec Schenk.

The Cardinal added three more points with a 9-4 decision at 184 pounds to secure the 12-point victory.

Duke is back in action Sunday evening at Cal Poly. The bout is schedule to start at 10 p.m., and features live video and live scoring. Links are available on GoDuke.com.
