    Stanford defeats Arizona State

    STANFORD, Calif. -- Winning six of the 10 bouts, the Stanford wrestling team defeated Arizona State, 18-13, Sunday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal improved to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-12, while the Sun Devils dropped to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

    Arizona State jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the dual as sixth-ranked Blake Stauffer posted a 10-1 major decision over redshirt sophomore Ryan Davies at 184 pounds and Josh DaSilveira edged redshirt freshman Garet Krohn, 7-6, at 197 pounds.

    Stanford heavyweight Nathan Butler put the Cardinal on the scoreboard with a 3-2 decision over Chace Eskam. The redshirt freshman improves to 25-6 overall, leading the team in wins, and 8-1 in duals this season.

    Redshirt junior Evan Silver, ranked 15th nationally, cut the ASU lead to one with a 5-2 decision over Ares Carpio at 125 pounds. Leading 3-1 heading into the third period, Silver secured two near fall points before Carpio could escape to seal the victory. He improves to 12-5 overall and to 4-2 in duals.

    Redshirt freshman Connor Schram gave Stanford a 9-7 lead in the dual with a 9-4 decision over Judson Preskitt at 133 pounds. He registered a quick takedown to open the bout and then took a 5-0 lead with three near fall points. He added another takedown, an escape and 2:18 of riding time in the win. He moves to 9-1 in his rookie season.

    The Sun Devils pulled within two in the team score after 10th-ranked Christian Pagdilao registered a 9-5 decision over redshirt senior Garrett Schaner at 149 pounds. He drops to 15-12 on the season.

    Redshirt sophomore Maxwell Hvolbek increased the Cardinal lead to 15-10 with a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Oliver Pierce at 157 pounds. Hvolbek is now 17-11 on the year.

    Redshirt sophomore Jim Wilson secured the win for Stanford with an 8-1 decision over Jacen Petersen at 165 pounds. Leading 7-0 with over five minutes of riding time in the third period, Wilson was called for locking his hands, giving Peterson a point. Wilson, ranked 14th in the nation, is now 24-4 overall and 8-1 in duals this season.

    ASU’s Ray Waters won the final bout of the day with a 5-3 decision over the Cardinal’s Keaton Subjeck at 174 pounds. A late scramble by Subjeck momentarily tied the match, but an escape by Waters and 1:07 of riding time gave him the win.

    Stanford hits the road next week, travelling to Utah Valley on Saturday, Jan. 31 and Boise State on Sunday, Feb. 1.
