Stanford beats California Baptist, Life Pacific to improve to 7-1

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- No. 21 Stanford wrestling captured six of 10 bouts to defeat host California Baptist, 22-12, Saturday, at Van Dyne Gym.

Stanford improved to 7-1 overall, while CBU dropped to 3-6 in its first season as a Division I program.

The Lancers took an early 6-0 lead in the dual with wins at 141 and 149 pounds. Redshirt freshman Tyler Eischens finally got the Cardinal on the board with an 8-3 decision over Zach Rowe at 157 pounds.

Redshirt freshman Shane Griffith made quick work of Cole Pruitt at 165 pounds. Griffith, ranked No. 7 in the nation, registered a fall in 1:29 to give the Cardinal the dual lead. He is now 20-0 to start the season – tied for the eighth-longest winning streak in program history.

Redshirt junior Jared Hill gave the Cardinal some breathing room with a 3-2 decision over Jacob Cooper at 174 pounds. Hill gave up a takedown in the opening period, but managed to escape. He rode out Cooper in the second period to lock in riding time before notching the winning escape in the third.

At 197 pounds, true freshman Seamus O'Malley turned in a 3-2 comeback decision over Arick Lopez. O'Malley trailed 2-1 going into the final period, where he was able to register the winning takedown with less than a minute remaining in the bout.

Another true freshman, Jackson DiSario, won a close match for the Cardinal at 125 pounds. DiSario held off a late surge by Dilan Atjun to post a 7-6 decision, winning with 2:25 of riding time.

Senior Brandon Kier closed out the dual with a dominating 13-1 major decision over Keanu Perez at 133 pounds.

Earlier in the day, Stanford shut out Life Pacific, 53-0, at Mehl Court in San Dimas. The Cardinal recorded five falls and picked up bonus points in nine of the 10 bouts.

Hill (174), O'Malley (197), redshirt senior Trevor Rasmussen (285), DiSario (125) and redshirt sophomore Ethan Woods (157), who was wrestling in his first collegiate dual, all registered falls for the Cardinal.
