Alex Tetzloff (right) passed away on FridayTetzloff, a 2014 grad of Perkins High and an assistant wrestling coach at the school, was killed in a crash outside of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was a passenger in a John Deere Gator all-terrain vehicle when it went off-road and into a ditch before flipping over, according to Fort Wayne's WANE-TV. When first responders came onto the scene at about 2 a.m. Friday, Tetzloff was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Gator driver, John Stephenson, 45, of Fort Wayne, suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
Both men were wearing seatbelts, according to multiple media reports.
Tetzloff was a member of the wrestling and football teams as a student at Perkins High. During his senior year in 2014, he was an Ohio Division II state wrestling qualifier.
Following graduation, Tetzloff signed on to the school's coaching staff, under his high school wrestling coach Travis Crabtree.
"He was a very loyal young man. Maturity-wise, he was beyond his years," Crabtree told the Sandusky Register on Friday. "You couldn't ask for a better young man to be teaching kids the sport."
News of Tetzloff's death spread quickly through Perkins High School on Friday. Crabtree described the day as being somber for both teachers and students.
"It's been a difficult day," Crabtree said. "The important thing is that we were lucky to have Alex in our lives. He was very positive, he did a lot of great things, and he touched a lot of (people)."
"Two different teachers told me today how they remember (Alex's) smile. That kid‚ he had a bright smile that just lit up the room."
Tetzloff was currently attending classes at BGSU (Bowling Green State University) Firelands, and was in Indiana on Friday with his father, according to the coach.
Perkins is one of two high schools in Sandusky, a city located on Lake Erie, approximately halfway between Cleveland and Toledo.
