Princeton defeats rival Franklin & Marshall

After a disappointing loss Friday evening at Clarion, the Princeton wrestling team bounced back for a 34-6 victory at Franklin & Marshall. The win, Princeton's third on the season, sends the team into finals break with some positive momentum; the Tigers know that the Ivy League season and EIWA Championships wait on the other side of this break.

A forfeit win for Garrett Frey, his 21st on the season, gave Princeton a 6-0 lead to open the match. Franklin & Marshall would cut the lead in half at 133, but Luis Ramos scored an 11-1 major decision at 141 to open a 10-3 lead. Ramos, who led 2-0 after the first period, scored a reversal and near fall in the second period to take control of the match.

Freshman Brandon Rolnick, whom head coach Chris Ayres believes is close to a breakthrough during his first season, grabbed a big 15-2 win at 149 to extend the lead to 14-3. Rolnick led 5-0 after the first period and 10-0 after the second en route to the convincing win.

Junior Daniel Kolodzik continued his impressive season with a first-period technical fall over Eric Norgard at 157. Kolodzik gained the edge with a takedown 12 seconds into the match, then scored near fall points on five different moves in the first period to earn a 16-0 win at the 3:00 mark.

Classmate Andy Lowy earned his first win of the season in dramatic fashion, scoring a reversal at the final whistle to take an 8-6 victory over Anthony Bongarzone at 165. Bongarzone scored the first three points of the final period to force a tie, but Lowy was able to reverse a takedown in the final seconds to get the win.

Freshman Ryan Callahan completed a perfect weekend with a 6-5 win over Matt Fullowan at 174. Callahan scored first with a first-period takedown, then added an escape and a takedown in the second to open a four-point lead. Fullowan rallied in the third, but Callahan used one last escape to clinch the match.

Senior captain Travis Erdman also completed a perfect weekend, and he scored Princeton's only pin of the day. He took down Matt Latessa 1:13 into their 184-pound match and scored the pin within the next 40 seconds. His win at 1:47 gave Princeton a 31-3 lead.

Freshman Dan Santoro dropped a tight 5-4 match due to riding time at 197, but sophomore Charles Fox ended the dual with a 2-1 win over Daniel Canfield at 285. Neither wrestler would earn a takedown, but Fox rode his opponent for 1:26 of the final period to clinch the extra point and the win.

Princeton will return from its break Jan. 29 with a match at Virginia before hosting a critical Ivy League doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 5. Princeton will take on Harvard at 10 a.m., then compete against Brown at 3 p.m. Both matches will be in Dillon Gym, and admission is free.
