With the win, the Panthers improve to 8-3 overall, while Davidson falls to 3-10.
"We were very aggressive today and we stayed after it and that's kind of been the theme that we've been trying to push on these guys," said head coach Keith Gavin. "Just stay after it and have faith that you will break through, today that's what we did. No matter who we are wrestling, if we just stay on the hunt like that I think good things will happen."
The win was Pitt's third shutout of the season and second time scoring 50 or more points in a dual. The Panthers' other two shutouts came against Duke and West Virginia this season.
Pitt took an early lead over the Wildcats when redshirt freshman Louis Newell won in a technical fall in 5:41, defeating Cian Fischer 17-0 at 125 pounds. Newell used three takedowns, a two nearfall, a four nearfall and riding time in the win.
Sixth-ranked redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi gave Pitt its second win of the day, a 9-1 major decision over Kyle Gorant. The win was Phillippi's fifth major decision of the year.
Davidson was deducted a team point at the conclusion of 133 pounds for unsportsmanlike conduct.
At 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Cole Matthews recorded his third fall of the season, pinning David Loniewski in 2:35 to give Pitt a 15-0 lead.
Moving to 149 pounds, redshirt sophomore Dallas Bulsak earned a 6-2 decision over Will Baldwin. Bulsak recorded two takedowns and an escape in the win.
Redshirt senior Taleb Rahmani and sophomore Hunter Kernan then recorded back-to-back falls at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. Kernan pinned his Davidson opponent in just 47 seconds. The pins gave Pitt a 30-0 in the dual.
Senior Curtis Decker continued the Panthers' winning ways at 174 pounds, winning in a 6-4 decision.
At 184 pounds, ninth-ranked redshirt sophomore Nino Bonaccorsi also pinned his opponent. He recorded the fall over Gavin Henry in 1:43 for Pitt's fourth of the day.
The Wildcats then forfeited 197 pounds to give Pitt a 45-0 lead.
In the final bout of the day, junior Cole Rickert ended things in dominant fashion. Rickert pinned Mitchell Trigg in 5:41 for the fifth and final fall of the day. The win completed Pitt's shutout over Davidson.
The Panthers will be back in action Friday, Feb. 14 when they travel to Chapel Hill to face the eighth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels.
