Penn tops Lock Haven on strength of 5 bonus point wins

PHILADELPHIA -- On a day where the University of Pennsylvania wrestling and gymnastics teams were both competing at The Palestra, the grapplers sent Lock Haven tumbling in a 25-14 win.

The Red and Blue won six bouts, netting bonus points in five of them, to defeat the Bald Eagles. Once again, the middle weights came through for the Red and Blue, with bonus points at 141, 157, 165, 174 and 184.

The dual started at 149 pounds and the Quakers found themselves in their only deficit of the afternoon following a last-second win for the Bald Eagles. Penn's Joe Oliva led, 5-2, late against Kyle Shoop but a headlock takedown and four backpoints in the final moments gave Lock Haven a brief feeling of confidence and a 3-0 lead.

May Bethea did not let Lock Haven linger in the bout, scoring a technical fall over Jon Ross. Bethea actually trailed in the bout after conceding the first takedown. However, he would score 18 of the next 19 points in the match, finally securing the tech fall with back points at 6:05 for an 18-3 win.

Brooks Martino again needed a comeback of sorts to put bonus points on the board for his team at 165 pounds. Despite initiating most of the action in the first period, Martino found himself trailing, 2-1, after one period. In the second, he finally finished on a shot, tacking on four nearfall in the process. In the third, an escape and takedown locked up a 10-2 major decision.

No. 10 Casey Kent was back to his dominant self to the tune of a 15-0 technical fall over Adam Mackie. Kent scored a takedown in the first period and loaded up three sets of nearfall for a 12-0 lead after one before a takedown at 3:52 finished off the shutout.

Joe Heyob would make it two consecutive blankings for the Red and Blue with a 9-0 major decision at 184 over Gavin Caprio. Heyob had a takedown in each period on his way to giving Penn an 18-3 lead at halftime.

Out of the break, No. 15 Frank Mattiace continued the momentum with a gutty 3-2 decision over Tristan Sponseller. Mattiace finished a takedown on the edge in the final 20 seconds for the winning score.

The Bald Eagles would take the next three bouts, but did not muster enough bonus points to sneak back into the match. No. 16 Thomas Haines had three takedowns and four back points on his way to an 11-0 major decision over Tyler Hall. At 125 pounds, Jake Field won by decision, 9-3, over Jeremy Schwartz but Penn's lead would stand at 11 with two matches remaining.

Lock Haven needed a technical fall at 133, but only scored a major decision via a 16-3 win from DJ Feldman over Tristin DeVincenzo.

A.J. Vindici would render Lock Haven's comeback moot with a major decision of his own to close the dual. A takedown and four nearfall in the third period gave Vindici an 11-3 win over Lewis Williams.
