Penn tops Columbia to run winning streak to four

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania’s wrestling team closed out the road portion of its 2014-15 season with a 25-10 win at Columbia, extending its winning streak to four matches in the process.

Four different Quakers had major decisions in the match, as Jeff Canfora, Brooks Martino, Brad Wukie and No. 5 Lorenzo Thomas put bonus points on the board to lead the Red and Blue.

Wukie’s win was a highlight as he broke a scoreless tie after one period with six takedowns over the final two periods en route to a 13-5 major over NCAA qualifier and former first-team All-Ivy selection Shane Hughes.

Thomas would follow up with a 16-3 major decision over another NCAA qualifier, Zack Hernandez. Thomas was dominant in the second period, with a pair of five-point sequences to break open a tight match.

Brooks Martino got off to a great start in his bout with Tyler Ponte, connecting on a takedown and adding three backpoints early in the first period. He would add a takedown and riding time in the third, scoring his final takedown at the buzzer for a 9-0 win.

Canfora’s major was a 9-1 defeat of Jacob Macalolooy, and it came on the strength of a takedown and three backpoints in the second and a late takedown of his own in the third period.

After a loss at 125, Penn tied the match with a 6-3 decision from No. 19 Caleb Richardson at 133. The bout was scoreless through one period, but Richardson opened the scoring with an escape and a penalty point before he connected on a takedown to lead 4-0 after two. In the third, he negated an Angelo Amenta rally with an escape and riding time.

No. 8 C.J. Cobb had to rally for a 5-3 decision over Connor Sutton at 149 after conceding an early takedown. Cobb would level the match, 3-3, before the end of the first period and ride out in the third period for the win.

Canaan Bethea was the seventh winner for the Red and Blue, dominating the early portion of the match with a takedown in each of the opening two periods. Matt Idelson would mount a comeback with an escape and takedown in the third, but Bethea escaped and added riding time for a 7-4 decision.

The Quakers conclude the regular season on February 21 with a pair of dual meets inside The Palestra. The Quakers will host Princeton at 12 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. dual with Drexel.
