Old Dominion claims third place at Virginia Duals

NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion overcame at 12-4 deficit following five bouts to earn at 16-15 victory over No. 10 Edinboro in the third-place match at the 35th annual Virginia Duals. The Monarchs improve to 6-3 in dual action this season.

"We had a good weekend, beating No. 25 Bucknell and No. 10 Edinboro for third place at the Virginia Duals," said Head Coach Steve Martin. "I think even our loss to No. 6 Virginia Tech was a positive because it came down to the last bout and we had a opportunity to win that match as well. Tristan Warner, Jack Dechow and Kevin Beazley had great weekends, as they finished undefeated. This was a great showing for us since there were six top-25 teams in the event. We are proud of our kids because they kept fighting and we really came together as a team this week. We will use this as a stepping stone for the NCAA tournament in March!"

The Monarchs fell behind early (0-3) following the 125-pound matchup. No. 16 Brandon Jeske faced No. 19 Khory Mines where he dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to the NCAA qualifier. Michael Hayes showed signs of strength in the 133 bout, taking down Anthony Rivera by a 9-0 major decision, earning four team points for ODU (4-3).

Edinboro would then go on to win the next three matches to take a 12-4 lead over the Monarchs. No. 6 Chris Mecate faced two-time All-American and the No. 2 wrestler in the nation at 141 pounds, Mitchell Port, falling by a 5-0 decision. No. 10 Lenny Richardson followed at 149 pounds and took on the No. 3 wrestler in the country in All-American Dave Habat and fell by a 4-0 decision. Freshman TC Warner faced Kasey Davis and dropped a very close 2-1 decision.

No. 15 Tristan Warner provided ODU with some momentum by winning his 165-pound bout over Casey Fuller by an 8-2 decision. He earned three team points for ODU to bring the Monarchs within five points of the Fighting Scots (12-7). Edinboro gained a little more ground by winning the 174-pound match over Austin Coburn (3-1 dec.), but that would be the last bout the Scots would win.

No. 2 Jack Dechow started the three-bout win streak at 184 pounds. He took on No. 12 Vic Avery and won by a comfortable 8-1 decision. No. 26 Kevin Beazley was up next at 197 pounds and he did his job, defeating Vincent Pickett by a 5-1 decision. The Fighting Scots led the Monarchs 15-13 going into the heavyweight match.

No. 24 Jake Henderson saw himself, for the second time in one day, in the win it or lose it position, as Edinboro was holding on to a slim two-point lead with just his match left. This time, Henderson came out with the win. He defeated Warren Bosch by a 2-0 decision to earn three points and the 16-15 win.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Jan. 18 when they travel to American to take on the Eagles at 2:00 p.m.
