With the dual meet on the line, true freshman and local Chesapeake product Seldon Wright rose to the occasion, taking down Michael Coleman, 7-3, to seal the win for the Monarchs.
Beginning at 174, Brooks Climmons got ODU off to a strong start with a commanding 6-1 decision over Anthony Cable.
Navy's No. 15 Mathew Miller responded in a big way for the Midshipmen, pinning ODU's No. 5 Jack Dechow in the first period. Dechow secured the leg of Miller on a high single, but Miller used a lateral drop from the single to pick up the first period fall. NCAA pin leader Michael Woulfe extended Navy's dual meet lead to 10-3 with a 12-3 major decision over ODU freshman Kaleab Fetahi at 197.
Austin Coburn bumped up to 285 and secured a win for the Monarchs for the second consecutive match. The redshirt senior scored a takedown and two nearfall points in a flury in the first 30 seconds to grab a 6-4 win over Nick Mabry. Brandon Jeske followed up with a 6-5 decision over Brant Leadbeter at 125.
It was all Navy at 133, as Zack Davis earned a 17-2 tech. fall over ODU's Josh Markham in the waning seconds of the bout.
All-Americans Chris Mecate and Alexander Richardson racked up six more points for Old Dominion, as No. 13 Mecate downed Nicholas Gil, 3-1, at 141, and No. 8 Alexander Richardson beat Corey Wilding, 5-3, at 149, to tie the dual meet at 15 apiece.
Drew Daniels gave Navy an 18-15 lead after 157, as the sophomore outlasted Devin Geoghegan, 5-2, but Wright's 7-3 match-winner at 165 catapulted the Monarchs ahead of the Midshipmen, 19-18 on criteria, snapping ODU's five-match losing streak.
ODU heads to Athens, Ohio next to battle the No. 23 Ohio Bobcats on Sunday, Feb. 7 at noon.
