Northern Illinois ranks 16th in team GPA

DeKalb, Ill. -- Being named one of the top 30 academic wrestling teams in the nation once could be described as an anomaly, but two years in a row sets a standard of academic excellence and for the second consecutive year the Huskie wrestling squad was listed as one of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Top 30 Academic Wrestling Teams.

The Huskies finished 16th out of a total of 30 teams with a cumulative grade-point-average of 2.9075, ranking NIU above such academic stalwarts as Cornell and Harvard. Last years squad also finished 16th and had an almost identical GPA.

"We're really proud of our guys accomplishments on and off the mat," Said head coach Dave Grant, "Our athletes have demonstrated great commitment to their studies and we're proud of their dedication."

The criteria for the award includes the cumulative GPA of the 10 wrestlers that competed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, as well as two alternates that wrestled in at least one varsity match.

The NIU wrestling squad will return to action in the fall and will feature national qualifiers Pat Castillo and Duke Burk.
