No. 16 Poway uses strength in numbers to win Mid-Cals title

In a big field event with two other nationally ranked teams, No. 16 Poway (Calif.) used its superior depth and an excellent overall performance to win the Mid-Cals title on Saturday afternoon. The Titans placed wrestlers in twelve weight classes, including eight inside the top three.

Leading the 312 point effort were weight class champions Scott Kiyono (132), No. 1 Quentin Hovis (152), and Hampton Boyd (160). Runner-up finishes came from Carson Sauriol (113), Chase Zollmann (126), and Domonic Mata (145); while Jacob Allen (106) and Nathan Tausch (182) placed third.

Tournament runners-up were No. 11 Tuttle (Okla.), who put eleven wrestlers on the podium, including six inside the top three, on the way to scoring 286 points. Weight class champions for the Tigers were No. 7 Tanner Litterell (138) and No. 14 Brik Filippo (145); Rhett Golowenski (120) finished as a runner-up; while Luke Surber (113), Dustin Plott (152), and Tanner Johnson (170) placed third.

The host school, No. 47 Gilroy (Calif.) placed third with 202 points. Despite the absence of two-time state placer Alex Felix (132), the Mustangs put seven on the podium, all of whom finished within the top four. Winning weight class titles were No. 14 Nico Aguilar (113) and Tony Andrade (195). Finishing as runner-up were John Fox (138), Joe Barnes (160), and Nick Villarreal (170); Chase Saldate (120) finished third; while Daniel Vizcara (126) placed fourth.

Two others schools earned a pair of weight class championships. Del Oro (Calif.) had gold medals coming from No. 3 Antonio Lorenzo (106) and Pablo Miller (285), while Oakdale (Calif.) had Abel Garcia (170) and Colbey Harlan (182) win titles. Rounding out the title-winners were Ian Timmins (Wooster, Nev.) at 120 pounds, No. 20 Robert Garcia IV (Selma, Calif.) at 126, and Jose Quintero (Alisal, Calif.) at 220.
