    No. 1 St. Cloud State claims third straight regional title

    The No. 1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team claimed its third consecutive NCAA Division II regional championship with a first place finish at the 2019 NCAA DII Super V Regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Moorhead, Minn.

    The Huskies have won NCAA regional titles in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2013, 2012 and 2011 under the direction of head coach Steve Costanzo.

    SCSU earned the title with 161 points, while Minnesota State was second with 86 points and Upper Iowa was third at 75. UW-Parkside (71), Augustana (61), MSU Moorhead (59.5), Mary (59), Northern State (57), Southwest Minnesota State (52.5) and Minot State (44) completed the tournament field.

    Individually, SCSU won eight weight bracket titles and will be sending nine wrestlers to the upcoming NCAA Division II championships on March 7-8 in Cleveland, Ohio.

    SCSU senior Brett Velasquez won his fourth consecutive regional title at 125-pounds, while Garrett Vos (133), Travis Swanson (141), James Pleski (149), Devin FitzPatrick (165), Kolton Eischens (174), Chance Helmick (184) and Vince Dietz (197) all won regional crowns and Jake Barzowski (157) also placed second for SCSU.
