This edition of the national rankings features more movement in the top ten than many of its predecessors. At 133 lbs, we had a significant jump from Braxton Brown who moved from #11 to #6. Brown defeated the returning Big Ten champion and now only has losses to the second (Romney) and fourth (Byrd) ranked 133 lbers.
At 149 lbs, Ethan Stiles continues his meteoric rise with his first career top-ten ranking. Stiles started the season at 157 lbs and showed some promise, but he’s been lights-out at 149 lbs. Over the last three weeks, Stiles has picked up wins over #9 (Lamer) #10 (Abas), and #13 (Williams). I generally like to be conservative with some like Stiles, who doesn’t have much of a track record; however, it’s hard to ignore three big wins like those.
Up a weight, we chose to hold with what we had at 157 lbs after top-ranked Tyler Kasak had to injury default out of a match with #6 Ethen Miller. Based on the match, I didn’t think it was a clear-cut win for Miller pre-injury. Miller still doesn’t have a regular win over any of the others ranked above him (though Teemer did not wrestle in their dual). All of that being said, should everything hold steady these next two weeks, Miller is likely in line for the #1 seed at the Big Ten Championships. There’s definitely a scenario where Kasak, Teemer, and Taylor are all on the bottom half of the bracket.
We had a flip-flop at 165 lbs as Terrell Barraclough overtook Peyton Hall for the #3 spot at the weight. It was Hall’s first loss of the year. As it stands, Barraclough could get the #1 seed at the Big 12 Championships and Hall would be on the bottom half with Cam Amine.
Losses by Iowa wrestlers at 174 and 184 lbs had a significant impact on both weights. Both have seen their Nebraska counterparts creep ahead of them.
Those losses, combined with a huge win from Luke Surber, have Oklahoma State and the Hawkeyes nearly tied in the team tournament rankings. As of now, Iowa only leads by a one and a half.
A big win by Josh Barr over previously unbeaten Jacob Cardenas pushes the Penn State freshman up to #3 in the country at 197 lbs. That helps Penn State to their highest point total of the season. They now are projected to have 147 points (without bonus factored in).
A few weeks ago, we removed Trey Munoz from the 197 lb rankings as he hadn’t competed since the CKLV in early December and their were some questions about whether or not he’d return. Well, Munoz was back and posted a 20-4 tech fall win over Cal Poly’s Tyler Hodges. He returns to the rankings and will have an off-week before finishing the regular season against North Carolina.
