And just like that, we have less than a month remaining in the collegiate regular season. This past weekend had a lot of action and some great duals. There weren’t any results that led to changes in the top two at any weight, which is semi-unusual.
Here are some of the notable moves this week in the rankings:
No major changes at the top of 125 lbs. Jore Volk fell to Ohio State’s unranked Vinny Kilkeary. We flipped Volk and Maximo Renteria. It didn’t seem right to push Volk any further down at this point. He’s above Jacob Moran, who doesn’t have any bad losses, but doesn’t have the amount of good wins that Volk does.
Aaron Seidel enters the rankings at #7 after his impressive tech fall victory over Tyler Knox. He also has two tournament wins and pinned/teched his way through both. Seidel’s teammate, Dillon Campbell, was removed due to injury.
Ryan Crookham medically forfeited out of the Bloomsburg Open which accounts for his lone loss. More importantly, there are some whispers that he was actually injured - to what degree, we’re trying to obtain more information.
Drake Ayala’s win over Jacob Van Dee has him jump Van Dee for the ninth slot.
Dominick Serrano’s perfect record was spoiled in a 7-1 loss to Evan Frost.
Cory Land was removed after he suffered a season-ending injury. We’ve decided to flip Anthony Echemendia and Brock Hardy in the #3/#4 spots. Hardy has wrestled a remarkably difficult schedule with four losses coming to the top two wrestlers. The issue is that he’s given up bonus points in three of those four contests, now. Echemendia has two close-ish losses to Mendez (counting the All-Star). He’ll face Vega on Sunday.
Luke Simcox moves up to #10 after his win over Ryan Jack. Simcox also won the Soldier Salute, an event that Nasir Bailey entered but loss before the finals.
149 lbs featured a #9 vs. #10 bout won by Collin Gaj - the previous #10. He moves up and Aden Valencia goes down to #11.
Ryder Block gets a little bump after his win via pin over Chance Lamer. Lamer drops after an 0-2 weekend.
No major changes at 157 lbs.
165’s previous #12 Ty Whalen drops after a loss to Cesar Alvan. Alvan continues to be difficult to rank. He has some very good wins, but some losses that are head scratching.
A loss to Will Denny has Bryce Hepner drop a few spots to #14 at 165 lbs.
A Christopher Minto win over Carson Kharchla kind of shakes up 174 lbs, a bit. We went with Minto/Kharchla/Matthew Singleton due to Kharchla’s win over Singleton and Kharchla also owning a win over Minto at the NDI.
Lenny Pinto’s rough patch sees him drop to 16 from 12. Also dropping was Garrett Thompson who suffered his first loss of the year to Northern Illinois’ unranked Tommy Bennett.
Once again, a result from Ohio State/Nebraska shook up the top ten at this weight. Silas Allred defeated Dylan Fishback, a reversal of their NDI match. James Conway was in between these two. He moves up on his lack of losses against anyone currently in the field and a few high quality wins. Allred moves head of Fishback.
The only significant movement in the top half of the 197 lbs rankings is Stanford’s true freshman Angelo Posada moving up a couple of spots. He had a great weekend in Virginia with a major over Sonny Sasso and a fall over UVA’s Stephen Burrell. Posada is quietly building a strong resume. There was a lot of shuffling in the 20-33 range at this weight, as well.
At heavyweight, we had to remove Nolan Neves due to a season-ending injury. In his place, Utah Valley’s Jack Forbes was inserted.
