The way the calendar fell this year we had holiday tournaments (Midlands/Soldier Salute) on Sunday/Monday, but nothing else within the week. The fallout from both tournaments wasn’t quite as crazy in years past. For the most part, many top-ranked wrestlers competing held serve and we didn’t see a gigantic rankings shake-up.
The exceptions are 174 and 197 lbs. Lorenzo Norman claimed a Midlands title at 174 lbs by handing Nick Incontrera his first loss of the year. With that, Norman moves into the top five at the weight. He’s now 14-1 with his lone setback being a one-point loss to #3 Dean Hamiti in Vegas. Also at 174 lbs, we’ve inserted Patrick Kennedy for Iowa - rather than Nelson Brands. Kennedy got the call against Iowa State and participated in the Soldier Salute, while Brands was not in action. Kennedy claimed the title in one of the better weight classes of the tournament posting ranked wins over Danny Wask and Josh Ogunsanya.
Of course, we'll monitor the Iowa 174 (and 184) lb situations as the calendar turns to 2025. Should Brands start to get more reps at the weight, we’ll re-insert him.
197 lbs at the Soldier Salute saw Isaiah Salazar take his first two losses of the 2024-25 regular season. Salazar was beaten by a pair of talented redshirting freshmen Cody Merrill and Aeoden Sinclair. Both were top-three prospects from the Class of 2024.
Salazar was one of a trio of Minnesota wrestlers who fell from the ranks of the unbeaten in Coralville. Vance Vombaur (141) and Tommy Askey (157) also suffered their first losses of the 2024-25 campaign. As a result, Minnesota slipped two spots in the tournament rankings.
