    NCAA DI Rankings Updated (12/17/2024)

With such a limited slate of action for the past week, I didn’t expect quite as many changes as we ended up having to this week’s version of the national rankings.

Starting at 125 lbs, Missouri’s Noah Surtin announced his retirement after battling back from early-season injuries. We wish Surtin the best. He has been removed from the rankings and Gage Walker has been considered in place of him.

After last week’s rankings, I had a question about Richie Figueroa/Troy Spratley at #2 and #3 and why they are still in that order. That could sort itself out this week as Spratley has a date with #4 Eddie Ventresca in one of the biggest duals of the week. I’d feel comfortable dropping Figueroa another spot or two as Spratley could continue to bolster his resume with a win over Ventresca. But let’s see if that happens, first.

133 lbs continues to be a mess! Despite having only a handful of duals, two returning All-Americans suffered losses (Bailey/Shawver). Both were to SoCon opponents - Blake Boarman and TK Davis. Boarman gets a decent bump from #33, Davis is my first guy left out. He has a loss to UVA’s second string 133 (Montaperto) while UVA’s starter (Gable Porter) current sits at #33.

The big change we made at the big man’s weight class was considering true freshman Daniel Herrera in place of Yonger Bastida at 285 lbs. Iowa State head coach Kevin Dresser publicly stated that Bastida would be out until at least January - and in the interim, they are considering applying for a medical waiver for the year. Should Bastida be healthy enough to get back into the Cyclone lineup, he would be inserted in a spot suitable for his resume.

From a dual rankings standpoint, there were a few minor changes. We’ve dropped Iowa State a few spots because of the injury to Bastida and the other more minor ailments they are working through. They got a win over North Dakota State, but they certainly won’t be the same caliber team as expected in the near future.

West Virginia drops a couple of spots due to their loss to California Baptist. The Lancers weren’t able to crack the top-30 just yet. In a dual setting, I still think they are a bad matchup against #30 Northern Colorado.

Update: Right before we were about to post rankings, we received information regarding Lehigh at 141/149 lbs. Malyke Hines has registered for the Sheridan Invitational at 149 lbs and intends on staying at that weight. Carter Bailey is expected to be “the guy” at 141.
