Missouri defeats Ohio to extend win streak to 31

ATHENS, Ohio - No. 5 Missouri Wrestling (11-0, 5-0) mounted a comeback to defeat MAC opponent Ohio on Friday night, with a final score of 30-12. This victory extended the Tigers' regular season win streak to 31 duals and keeps the Tigers undefeated during the 2018-19 season.

Mizzou Wrestling remains perfect against the Bobcats, moving to 7-0 against them since joining the MAC in 2012-13.

    Dual Recap

After dropping the first three bouts of the night, the Tigers went on a roll to tie up the score and eventually defeat the Bobcats. It was freshman Brock Mauller (Columbia, Mo.) that earned the Tigers their first points, earning his 14th decision of the season and improving his record to 21-1.

The Tigers were perfect following Mauller's performance, winning the final six bouts and landing three pins.

True freshman Jarrett Jacques (Columbia, Mo.) landed his first pin of the season to earn the Tigers their first bonus points. His pin came against MAC opponent Zac Carson, who was placed second in the conference at 157. This upset improves Jacques' freshman season record to 19-5.

Redshirt juniors Connor Flynn (Dardenne Prairie, Mo) and Luke Fortuna (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) both earned decisions over their opponents to build Missouri's lead before the victory was solidified by two consecutive pins coming from redshirt senior Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore Wyatt Koelling (Kaysville, Ut.).

    Notable Tigers

Jacques, a true freshman, earned his first pin of the season against an experienced opponent in order to move the Tigers within reach of the Bobcats and further swing the momentum in Missouri's favor. Coming in the first period, Jacques wasted no time in dominating his opponent and putting him on his back.

Lewis also made quick work of his opponent, wrestling up in the 184 weight class for the first time this season. The extra weight seemingly had no impact on Lewis, as he worked his opponent and landed the pin a little over a minute into the first period.

Redshirt sophomore Koelling put on a dominant performance of his own, battling through the first period and earning a takedown and reversal before finally getting the pin. It was his fall that secured the win for the Tigers and solidified the 31st victory in Missouri's impressive win streak.

    Up Next

The Tigers return home to Columbia to face off against the Northern Iowa Panthers next Thursday night at the Hearnes Center. The meet is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The Tigers defeated UNI 23-9 in their last meeting.
