Missouri claims share of MAC title after defeating Cleveland State

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- No. 24 Mizzou Wrestling claimed its ninth consecutive conference championship after defeating Cleveland State, 20-12, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 25) in the second of a dual doubleheader at the Hearnes Center. The Tigers are now 10-5 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in MAC competition. At 7-0, Mizzou is the only remaining unbeaten in the conference and has clinched a share of the MAC Championship, its eighth straight since joining the league. Only Rider (5-1 MAC) can share the title with the Tigers. Should Mizzou defeat SIU-Edwardsville in its MAC finale on Feb. 12, it will win the title outright.

"I don't keep count of those things," head coach Brian Smith said of Mizzou's 21-dual win streak in the MAC and the program's ninth straight conference title. "It's nice that we keep doing that stuff. It's something that we expect to happen, we are going out there and competing. It's good because it gets media to write about it. It's fun to see that for the kids, but we just need to keep working. We've won a couple matches in a row – I want to see us keep improving and getting better."

Mizzou's streak of conference championships began with a tournament title at the 2012 Big 12 Championships during the school's final year in the league. Since joining the MAC, the Tigers have won the last eight championships. The MAC Tournament will be held March 7-8 in Dekalb, Ill.

Looking at the Cleveland State dual, it opened with a hard-fought 12-10 loss at 125 pounds by Cameron Valdiviez to CSU's Logan Heil. But Allan Hart got Mizzou back in the win column as he completed a perfect day at 133 pounds with a 6-1 win over CSU's Justin Patrick. Hart tallied 4:11 of riding time in the bout as he was dominant for all seven minutes.

Cleveland State's Evan Cheek, who is 28-3 this season, won at 141 pounds over Mizzou's Alex Butler, but fifth-ranked Brock Mauller posted a 14-4 major decision over Gus Sutton at 149 to get Mizzou the dual lead back at 7-6. 157-pounder Jarrett Jacques then followed with a dominant 6-1 win over Nico O'Dor as Mizzou opened a 10-6 lead midway through.

Peyton Mocco made it three straight wins for Mizzou with a 6-3 win over Riley Smucker, extending Mizzou's lead to 6-3. RS senior Connor Flynn got the nod at 174 pounds for Coach Smith's team and drew CSU's Chase Archangelo. Flynn made easy work of him with a 9-0 win, posting 2:41 riding time, moving Mizzou's lead to 17-6.

Senior Dylan Wisman defeated DeAndre Nassar, 6-2, to wrap up a 2-0 personal day at 184 pounds improving his record to 13-5. With Mizzou leading 20-6 moving into 197 pounds, Wyatt Koelling dropped a 3-1 decision in sudden victory to Ben Smith. At heavyweight, the doubleheader closed with a 3-2 win for Cleveland State's Collin Kelly in double overtime over Jacob Bohlken.
