    Minnesota State-Moorhead defeats Dickinson State

DICKINSON, N.D. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead opened with two straight pins and ended the match with four straight victories on its way to a 30-12 dual win over Dickinson State in nonconference action Wednesday night in Dickinson, N.D.

Dickinson State entered the match ranked No. 16 in the NAIA poll.

Freshman Blake Bosch and redshirt freshman Austin Leibel each earned pins for the Dragons to open the match, while MSUM pulled away with four straight wins to conclude the match, including three by major decision.

"We started strong and ended strong," MSUM head coach Kris Nelson said.

Bosch and Leibel helped MSUM jump out to an early 12-0 lead. Bosch pinned Cade Codes at 125 pounds in just 1:30 to give the Dragons a 6-0 lead. Leibel followed moments later at 133 with a pin of Mack Chambers in 4:30 as MSUM's lead grew to 12-0.

"We started strong with two pins. Blake Bosch got us going right away," Nelson said. "Austin Leibel followed that up and got another pin for us."

Dickinson State won at 141 to cut the Dragon lead to 12-3, but freshman Garret Hoffner quickly got those points back at 149 pounds for the Dragons with a 7-2 win over Sean Elkins – who is ranked No. 7 in NAIA.

The Blue Hawks won by decision at 157 pounds (1-0) and then by fall at 165 to cut the MSUM lead to 15-12.

From there, MSUM took over, starting with junior Michael Joseph earning an 8-0 major decision win over Tyler Brown at 174 pounds.

"Michael Joseph looked really good. He wrestled aggressive the whole time," Nelson said.

At 184 pounds, senior Matt Lewellen improved to 9-3 overall with a dominant 15-6 win over Lane Oversen.

"Matt was in a pretty good match. The kid was a good scrambler and put Matt in a lot of different positions," Nelson said. "Matt wrestled under control and kept his composure."

The wins by Joseph and Lewellen pushed the MSUM lead to 23-12. Freshman Tyler Schlosser improved to 6-2 on the year with an 8-0 major decision win over Skyler Carroll at 197 as the Dragons put the match out of reach, 27-12.

Junior Gerad Fugleberg improved to 2-0 on the year with a 5-0 win over Brian Klevies to give MSUM seven wins in 10 matches on the night.

"Our big guys wrestled tough," Nelson said.

MSUM will send a small contingent of wrestlers to the Jamestown Open on Saturday. MSUM's first home meet is set for Dec. 7 when it hosts the annual Dragon Open at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
