Michigan rolls at Rutgers in return to competition mat

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Nine months after the 2019-20 college wrestling season was abruptly canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic, the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team rolled to a 26-10 win over No. 15 Rutgers in its return to the competition mat on Friday night (Jan. 8) at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The Wolverines claimed seven individual bouts, including six of the first seven, and earned bonus points in three.

Freshman Dylan Ragusin set the tone with a quick first-period fall in his collegiate debut, pinning 20th-ranked Nicolas Aguilar at the 1:01 mark at 125 pounds. Ragusin, who captured a USA Wrestling freestyle junior national title this fall after also reaching the senior national final, hit a standing cow catcher and tossed Aguilar to his back in the opening minute before settling in for the quick pin.

Senior/junior Jack Medley, ranked 13th nationally at 125 pounds, bumped up to defeat Devon Britton, 10-5, at 133 pounds. He scored four takedowns -- two apiece in the first and third periods -- and accumulated 3:09 in riding-time advantage in his season debut.

Rutgers got on the board with a major decision from fourth-ranked Sebastian Rivera at 141 pounds before the Wolverines reeled off four straight match wins at the middleweights to clinch the dual win.

Fifth-year senior Kanen Storr, ranked sixth at 149 pounds, toughed out a 4-2 decision against Mike Van Brill after earning a reversal and rideout in the first tiebreaker. Junior/sophomore Will Lewan, ranked ninth nationally, followed with a decisive 11-5 win against Robert Kanniard at 157 pounds. Lewan, who along with Storr, was an NWCA Second Team All-American last season, broke it open with a pair of four-point sequences on the second period, reversing Kanniard to his back early in the frame before going feet-to-back on the edge a minute later. He finished with two takedowns, a reversal, four back points and 1:46 riding-time advantage.

Sophomore/freshman Cameron Amine, ranked 17th nationally, was victorious in his varsity debut at 165 pounds, cruising to a 10-4 decision against Brett Donner behind three takedowns, a reversal and 2:18 in riding-time advantage. Sixth-year senior Logan Massa, ranked second at 174 pounds cruised to a 13-5 major decision against Joe Grello in his return to the Wolverine lineup after taking an Olympic redshirt in 2019-20. The Wolverine All-American gave up the first takedown in an early scramble but responded with five of his own, including two apiece in the second and third periods, and rode for 1:52 on the bonus point.

After a pair of Scarlet Knight decision wins at 184 and 197 pounds, junior heavyweight Mason Parris, ranked second, closed out the dual with an 11-3 major decision over Christian Colucci. Parris, a 2020 NWCA First Team All-American, scored on four takedowns -- with three in the first period and another late in the third off a sloppy Rutgers reshot before riding out the bout for the bonus win.

The Wolverines (1-0) will wrap up the weekend road swing -- their only two-date weekend of the season -- with an 11 a.m. slate on Sunday (Jan. 10) against Maryland at the XFINITY Center in College Park, Md. The dual will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
