Michigan knocks off in-state rival Michigan State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team started strong and ended with a bang to knock off in-state rival Michigan State, 22-14, in its Big Ten Conference opener on Friday night (Jan. 10) in front of a sellout crowd of 1,800 fans at Cliff Keen Arena.

The Wolverines won each of the five opening bouts to take a 16-point lead into the intermission break and, after MSU narrowed the score with four straight of its own, sophomore heavyweight Mason Parris slammed the door with a 29-second pin to end the dual meet.

Parris, ranked third nationally, improved to 17-0 on the season and secured his team-best fifth fall -- and 10th bonus win -- with an arm bar against Christian Rebottaro. He converted on his fireman's carry in the opening 10 seconds of the bout, tried for a half then used an arm bar to turn Rebottaro and get the quick pin.

Junior/sophomore Jack Medley also earned bonus points in the dual's first bout, setting the tone with a 13-4 major decision over Logan Griffin at 125 pounds. Medley scored on five takedowns -- two apiece in the first and third periods -- and added a second-period reversal and 2:36 in riding-time advantage.

Sophomore/freshman Joey Silva and senior/junior Kanen Storr were victorious in their first appearances in the Wolverine lineup this season at 133 and 149 pounds, respectively. It was Silva's season and varsity debut; he scored three takedowns -- two in the first period, including a buzzer-beater double leg, before icing the bout off a go-behind and rideout in the third. He finished with 2:19 in riding-time advantage.

Storr, who came out of his Olympic redshirt at the Midlands Championships late in December, used a third-period takedown to ice his 4-1 decision against Alex Hrisopoulos at 149 pounds -- up a weight class from his starting spot a year ago. Storr, ranked 10th nationally, struggled to finish on several early chances in the first, avoided giving up a takedown late in the second and took his first lead after a second MSU stall warning -- for untied shoelaces -- and quick escape in the third. He finished on a single leg and rode out the match.

Freshman Cole Mattin and sophomore/freshman Will Lewan also toughed out close decision wins at 141 and 157 pounds, respectively. Like Storr, Mattin used a third-period takedown -- and a tough ride -- to ice a 4-2 decision against Matt Santos. With the score even midway through the third, Mattin blew through a double leg and nearly rode out the remainder of the match, accumulating 1:20 in time advantage.

Lewan, ranked 15th nationally, took the dual's marquee match with a 3-1 overtime decision against Jake Tucker. A wild scramble over the last 20 seconds of regulation produced no points. Lewan twice appeared in trouble, first off a Tucker double-leg shot, then after stepping over to nearly put the Spartan on his back, again off a single leg. The Wolverine wasted little time in the extra frame, finishing on a single leg within the opening 20 seconds.

The Wolverines will remain at home next weekend, when they host Maryland at 7 p.m. next Friday (Jan. 17) at Cliff Keen Arena before heading to Crisler Center for a 2 p.m. slate against Minnesota on Sunday (Jan. 19). Tickets are available for both duals through the U-M Ticket Office.
