    Michigan cruises past Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan team bounced back in a big way, earning a decisive 26-9 win against No. 22 Purdue on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 8) at the Boilermakers' Holloway Gymnasium. The Wolverines claimed seven individual wins, earning bonus points in three, including both marquee matches against ranked opponents.

Junior/sophomore Conor Youtsey opened the dual with a bonus win, cruising to a 10-2 major decision over Luke Welch at 125 pounds. Youtsey scored on four takedowns, including one in the waning seconds to secure the bonus point, and accumulated 3:35 in riding-time advantage. He improved to 6-2 in Big Ten duals this season.

The Boilermakers claimed back-to-back decisions at 133 and 141 pounds -- but by the narrowest of margins. Fifth-year senior Zebulon Hilyard scored first against 11th-ranked Danny Sabatello and rode out the second period to build up significant time advantage but gave up a third-period reversal to fall, 7-5. Sophomore/freshman George Fisher led late against Nick Lawrence at 141 pounds but similarly gave up a reversal midway through the third to even the score before sacrificing a point on his third caution in the final closing seconds to lose 8-7.

Freshman Alec Pantaleo, ranked 13th in the latest InterMat poll, cruised to an 8-5 decision over Brandon Nelsen at 149 pounds, scoring on three takedowns -- one in each period -- and adding a reversal early in the third period. He allowed Nelsen only escapes. Pantaleo improved to 7-1 in Big Ten duals.

Sophomore Brian Murphy, ranked 11th, scored big points in the dual's first marquee match at 157 pounds, building up an eight-point lead against 10th-ranked Doug Welch before cradling up the Boilermaker for his first collegiate pin at the 4:56 mark. After a scoreless first period, Murphy reversed Welch to his back for four points early in the second and again -- for five points -- off a single-leg scramble midway through the period. Firmly in control on top, Murphy locked up the cradle and worked to get him flat, securing the call just before the second-period buzzer.

Purdue added another one-point decision at 165 pounds before the Wolverines rolled to four straight wins at the upperweights to close out the dual.

Fifth-year senior Jake Salazar cruised to a controlling 6-2 decision over Chad Welch at 174 pounds, scoring on three takedowns, including a pair of first-period double legs. After just missing on a single-leg shot late in the third, he exploded through another double leg on the subsequent restart in the final 10 seconds.

Sophomore Domenic Abounader, ranked 10th, earned a stingy 4-0 decision over Tanner Lynde at 184 pounds, scoring on a second-period single leg and accumulating 2:59 in riding-time advantage. Abounader spent much of the second and third periods looking for a turn but could not get it, settling instead for the decision victory.

Fifth-year senior Max Huntley, ranked eighth, dominated the second marquee match at 197 pounds, cruising to an 8-0 major decision against 11th-ranked Braden Atwood. Huntley finished on an immediate single-leg attack and rode out the first period, drawing an early stall warning on bottom. He added another single leg in the second and two stall points in the third before finishing the bout with 4:08 in time advantage.

With the dual win secured, fifth-year senior Chris Heald bumped up to step in at heavyweight and claimed a 7-3 decision over Tyler Kral in the final bout. Heald scored on three takedowns -- one in each period -- and accumulating 2:37 riding-time advantage. It was his first dual win of the season -- in his heavyweight debut.

The Wolverines will hit the road again next Friday (Feb. 13), heading to Iowa City, Iowa, to face top-ranked Iowa at 7 p.m. CST at Carver Hawkeye Arena. The dual will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
