Michigan bounces back with dominant win at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team bounced back with a dominant win at Northwestern on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 22), earning bonus points in seven of eight wins to roll to a 38-10 victory at the Wildcats' Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wolverines boasted two pins, four technical falls and a major decision to close out their weekend road trip.

Junior/sophomore Malik Amine set the tone with a quick fall in his dual-meet debut at 149 pounds -- the dual's starting weight -- using a bottom-leg turk to pin Shayne Oster at the 48-second mark. He struck on a high crotch just seconds into the first period before ending the bout early. It marks his fourth fall of the season.

Fifth-year senior Conor Youtsey, who made his season debut after rejoining the Wolverine roster just last week, also earned a pin at 125 pounds after the intermission break, using a suck back early in the second period before finishing Anthony Rubinetti in a half at the 4:13 mark. Youtsey led 4-2 at the time after scoring on a pair of first-period takedowns.

The Wolverines reeled off three straight technical falls after Amine's pin, earning big bonus points from senior Brian Murphy and sophomore/freshman Logan Massa and Myles Amine and 157, 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Murphy, ranked ninth in the latest InterMat poll, piled on 14 points in the third period to beat Ben Sullivan, 21-4, scoring on three takedowns and eight back points to end the bout at the 6:37 mark.

Massa, ranked second nationally at 165 pounds, rebounded from his first loss of the season with a 26-10 technical fall over Johnny Sebastian. He finished on 12 takedowns -- four in each period -- and rode for 2:34 to secure the tech fall at match's end. It is his seventh technical fall of the season and 13th bonus win.

Myles Amine, ranked ninth nationally, also used his riding-time point to secure a 21-6 technical fall over Braxton Cody in the subsequent bout at 174 pounds. Amine scored eight takedowns, added a two-point near fall off a second-period cradle and rode for 4:26. It is his 11th bonus win this season.

Sophomore/freshman Jackson Striggow earned a 6-3 decision over Jacob Berkowitz at 197 pounds after the intermission break. Striggow grabbed the early lead on a first-period technical violation and iced the match with a pair of third-period takedowns, including a counter double leg to pad his lead midway through the frame.

Northwestern earned wins at 184 pounds and heavyweight, but the Wolverines responded with three straight wins to close out the dual. Sophomore/freshman Stevan Micic, ranked fourth at 133 pounds, followed Youtsey's pin with another technical fall, cruising to a 17-2 win over Jason Ipsarides. The Wolverine wrestler blew the match open with a six-point sequence off a two-on-one in the first period and added another four-point near fall in the second and a reversal and takedown in the third.

Sophomore/freshman Sal Profaci closed out the dual with a hard-fourth 7-3 decision over Alexander McKenna at 141 pounds, scoring on takedowns in the first and third period and a reversal in the second to control the bout throughout. A couple of penalty points narrowed the score, but Profaci iced it with a counter takedown in the waning seconds and added a riding-time point for his 1:40 advantage time.

The Wolverines will wrap up the home portion of their 2016-17 dual season next weekend with a pair of duals at Cliff Keen Arena. On Friday (Jan. 27), U-M will host Rutgers at 7 p.m. before welcoming Lehigh at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 29). Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
