    Mercyhurst pushes past Gannon

ERIE, Pa. -- It was another rivalry match that went down to the wire, with Mercyhurst grinding out the 24-18 victory over Gannon. The Lakers improved to 10-3 on the year while Gannon dropped to 3-4 overall.

Willie Bohince put the Lakers on the board quickly, pinning Casey Vollmer in the opening period at 1:22.

Kevin Kinyua then followed with a tough 6-5 decision over Aaron Smith, pushing the Lakers lead to 9-0.

However, Gannon's regionally-ranked wrestler John Marotto (No. 5) held off Joey Miller at 141 by a score of 4-3 to put the Golden Knights on the board, and George McGuire evened the team score with a pin against Joel Bowers (3:57).

In the first matchup of two regionally ranked wrestlers, No. 4 Nate Ross narrowly escaped the last second efforts of No. 1 Francis Mizia to tie the match in the final seconds, holding on for a 5-4 win.

In the following matchup, the region's top-ranked 174 pounder (No. 3 nationally) wasted little time avenging the Lakers loss in the previous bout, needing only 19 seconds to pin Jake Stratton and bring Mercyhurst even in the team scoring, 15-15.

The win for A. Mizia moved him into sole possession of second place on the Lakers all-time career wins list with 110. Andy Lamancusa holds the all-time mark at 119.

At 184 lbs, Angelo Bortoluzzi posted a major decision of Chris Matthews, 12-3. Matthews is currently ranked No. 4 at 174 lbs.

At 197, Lorenzo Maddox used a 5-2 decision over Jamar Henry to cut the Lakers lead to one, 19-18, heading into the final match.

Heavyweight Andy Welton sealed the victory for the Lakers with a technical fall (16-0, 4:17) .
