Medina and Martin of Cumberlands compete at Junior World Championships

University of the Cumberlands is honored to be the training center for lady wrestlers Jessica Medina (Pomona, CA) and Heather Martin (Wellington, OH). Medina and Martin faced off against the world's finest athletes at the Junior World Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala on Thursday evening.

Medina, a junior at Cumberlands, competed in the 51 kilogram weight division. Defeating opponent Nanna Pedersen of Sweden 4-3, 2-0 in the bronze-medal match, Medina earned her first World Medal.

Martin, also a junior, fell from a second place finish in the event in 2005 to fifth place this year. Despite the finish, Martin has gained a valuable experience to apply to future tournaments.

The women's wrestling program looks to open the upcoming season on October 5, 2006 with an intra-squad dual.
