    Ohio dominates Clarion

    ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling squad dominated Clarion with a 40-4 win in their dual Saturday at the Convocation Center. The Bobcats won nine out of 10 matches including three by pin fall.

    “I want our guys to be better every day,” said head coach Joel Greenlee. “Our guys came back and did the same things they have always done, kept wrestling hard, scored points and it worked out for us today.”

    Freshman Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) got things going for the Bobcats with a win via pin fall over Roshaun Cooley in the 133-pound matchup. Kelly scored a two-point takedown and dominated the top position, Kelly the nearly had a fall before landing the pin with just 11-seconds left in the opening frame (2:49).

    In the 141-pound matchup, freshman Noah Forrider (Marysville, Ohio) picked up a major decision outpointing Michael Bartolo 17-7. Forrider landed three takedowns in the opening frame and an escape to lead 7-4 after one. In the second. Forrider landed two more takedowns and an escape to lead 12-5 after two. Forrider landed two more takedowns in the third to set the final tally at 17-7.

    Freshman Nick Steed (Canton, Ohio) picked up the second pin of the night downing Brodie Zacherl in the 149-pound bout. Steed landed a takedown in the first and an escape in the second to lead 3-1 after two. After an escape in the third, steed landed a power takedown and pinned Zacherl with 1:25 left in the match (5:37).

    Redshirt senior Spatak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) picked up a major decision over Clarion's Jacob Keller, 15-7. Chino stuffed a takedown attempt by Keller before landing a takedown. Keller answered with a reversal before being reset with Chino in the down position. Chino hit a reversal before the end of the frame. In the second, Chino started down and landed a reversal off the first position. Chino then landed a takedown to take a 8-3 lead after two. Chino landed three more takedowns to finish with a 15-7 advantage in the match and move Ohio to 20-0 in the match.

    Redshirt freshman Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio) made quick work of Troy Braddock in the 165-pound match. Reese landed a single leg takedown and a four-point near fall to start the match. Reese started in the top position on a reset and pinned Braddock with at the 1:43 mark of the opening frame.

    Redshirt senior Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) battled Michael Pavasko to a 9-4 decision win. In the opening frame, Walters reversed a takedown from Pavasko and ha da near fall to score two more points, leading 4-2 after the opening frame. Walters landed a reversal from the first position in the second and landed another takedown in the third to move Ohio to a 29-0 advantage.

    At 184 pounds, redshirt senior Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) dominated Dominic Rigous through the entire match taking a 7-1 decision. Romanchik landed a takedown in the opening frame, a reversal in the second and a takedown in the third, dominating position the entire time.

    Redshirt senior Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) picked up a major decision win over Edgar Ruano at 197-pounds. Wellington landed a two-point takedown in the opening frame and stuffed every attempt from Ruano. In the second, Wellington landed an escape and a takedown before landing two more takedowns in the third to finish the major decision, 11-1.

    Freshman Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) put an exclamation point on the dual picking up an 18-10 major decision over Clarion's Travis Jones. It was back and fourth with Laney landing three takedowns and two escapes and Jones picking up three reversals and a two-point near fall to finish the opening frame with a tie 8-8. In the second, Laney landed two-single leg takedowns to take a 13-9 advantage after two frames. Laney landed a double-leg takedown and with just a few seconds left sealed the major decision with a takedown to set the final tally at 40-4, Ohio.

    Ohio returns to the mat on Jan. 22 hosting Northern Illinois at the Convocation Center. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
