    Central Michigan edges Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Bonus points by Scotti Sentes at 133 pounds and Scott Mattingly at 141 pounds lifted No. 11 Central Michigan to a 19-18 nonconference wrestling win at Michigan State Friday night.

The victory was CMU's 10th straight over the Spartans dating back to 2001.

"It was a win, but I didn't think we were really sharp tonight," said CMU head coach Tom Borrelli. "I think we're improving and guys are doing all the right things with their training, but we just looked a little fatigued tonight."

Michigan State (8-3 overall) took its only lead of the night when Eric Olanowski opened the dual with an 8-3 decision over Christian Cullinan at 125 pounds. Sentes and Mattingly, however, scored 10 points in the next two bouts to give the Chippewas (4-7 overall) a lead they would not relinquish.

Sentes needed just 1:50 to record his team-leading seventh fall of the season. He also leads the Chippewas with 22 victories this season.

Mattingly snapped a seven-match losing skid with a decisive 12-2 major decision over Joel Trombly at 141 pounds. The victory was Mattingly's second in a dual match and his first major decision this season.

Michigan State drew within 10-6 when Dan Osterman defeated Donnie Corby at 149 pounds, but the Chippewas won each of the next three bouts to put the match out of reach.

Ryan Cubberly (157), Mike Miller (165) and Ben Bennett (174) all won by decision to stretch the Chippewas' lead to 19-6. Cubberly's victory was a 4-2 decision over Sean McMurray that went to the second set of tiebreakers. Miller won his second straight match since returning from an injury, while Bennett improved to 21-4 overall, 10-1 in duals with his victory.

Michigan State claimed decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, and CMU forfeited the heavyweight bout with the team victory already secured.

The Chippewas are back in action next Sunday, Jan. 30, when they host Old Dominion as part of the inaugural Royal Rumble and Tumble at McGuirk Arena. The Chippewas' dual against Old Dominion and CMU's gymnastics home opener against Northern Illinois will be held simultaneously in McGuirk Arena at 2 p.m.
