    Central Michigan downs Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Central Michigan won six matches -- three by major decision and one via technical fall -- Friday in downing Michigan State, 23-12, in a nonconference wrestling dual at the Spartans' Jenison Fieldhouse.

The win lifted CMU to 3-1. The Chippewas, who are ranked 16th, go to No. 8 Missouri on Sunday for a MAC dual (2 p.m.). CMU dropped its league-opening dual to Northern Iowa, 17-16, last weekend.

“it's a big challenge for us,” CMU coach Tom Borrelli said of the meet with Missouri, which is 8-2 overall, 5-0 MAC. “We'll find out whether we're up for it or not.”

The Chippewas got an 18-1 technical fall victory from CJ Brucki at 174 pounds against the Spartans (3-7) on Friday. CMU's Brent Fleetwood (125), Justin Oliver (149) and Jordan Ellingwood (184) each won by major decision.

“Very happy with our aggressiveness and trying to continue to score points for the whole seven minutes,” Borrelli said.

The meet opened at 184, and the Chippewas won the first four matches. CMU's Austin Severn (197) and Newton Smerchek (HWT) followed Ellingwood with decision victories, and Fleetwood posted his major to extend the Chippewa lead to 14-0.

Michigan State won by decision at 133 and 141 before Oliver, who is the highest-ranked Chippewa nationally (sixth at 149) won by major decision to put CMU comfortably in front 18-6.

That allowed Borrelli the luxury of resting junior Colin Heffernan, who is ranked eighth at 157.

“That was real important,” Borrelli said.

Kyle Noonan, normally a 141-pounder, stepped in at 157 in place of Heffernan and though he dropped an 8-3 decision, Borrelli was pleased with his performance as he was with Mason Smith (141) and Logan Parks (165). Smith and Parks each lost by decision, but they didn't surrender any bonus points.

“Mason and Parks wrestled their two best wrestlers and they held them both to decisions and Noonan wrestling up two weight classes – all three of those guys came through,” Borrelli said. “You give up bonus points or a pin, that can change everything.”
