"We did a nice job in picking up where we left off last week," said Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. "We have to continue to be aggressive. That's one thing we've talked about all year long. If we aren't aggressive, we won't have good results."
An injury to Penn's Lorenzo Thomas negated what would have been the feature bout of the dual. Instead, Brown faced backup 174 pounder Dan McDevitt in the opening bout of the dual at 184. Brown took an early shot and was awarded a takedown a minute later. Later in the opening period Brown used a half nelson to put McDevitt on his back and recorded the fall in 2:32 to give Lehigh an early 6-0 lead.
Sophomore Elliot Riddick extended Lehigh's lead to 10-0 with a 14-4 major decision over Carson Stack at 197. Riddick built a 6-1 lead after one period thanks to two takedowns and a two point near fall and finished the bout with an impressive 3:29 riding time advantage.
The Mountain Hawks' lead grew to 13-0 as sophomore heavyweight Doug Vollaro won an 8-1 decision over Patrik Garren and Parker followed with an impressive 19-4 technical fall over Jeremy Schwartz at 125. Parker led 7-1 after two periods and was successful piling on the third period points to get to the 15-point cushion. The freshman had a three point near fall, two takedowns and two penalty points in the final stanza, securing a late takedown and adding riding time advantage to secure the tech.
"He was great," Santoro said of Parker. "He reminds me a bit of Robert Hamlin where the first period can be close but in the second and third period he can open things up and that's what he did to get that tech fall."
In the only bout of the dual matching ranked wrestlers, Lehigh's sixth-ranked junior Mason Beckman led off No. 20 Caleb Richardson 3-2 at 133. Beckman broke a 1-1 tie with a third period takedown and fought off a shot at the end to give the Mountain Hawks a 21-0 lead at intermission.
In the first bout after the break, sophomore Randy Cruz continued his recent strong run with an 8-0 major decision over Jeff Canfora at 141. Leading 3-0 early in the third period, Cruz worked his way into a cradle that produced a takedown and two point near fall and added a 1:58 riding time advantage to earn the bonus point.
Penn (1-2, 0-1 EIWA) picked up its first win at 149 as tenth-ranked C.J. Cobb held off freshman Drew Longo 8-5. Cobb scored a takedown in each period, but three cautions and a penalty point from an illegal hold helped Longo stay in the match.
Sophomore Will Switzer got Lehigh back on track, scoring takedowns in the first and third periods to defeat May Bethea 5-2 at 157.
"Will was outstanding," Santoro said. "He came out and was really aggressive and kept the pressure on the whole time. Will's a really good wrestler. He did a nice job even though he was giving up all that weight because he wrestled hard. He did a great job."
At 165, senior Santiago Martinez scored a takedown in each period to defeat Quinton Hiles 8-3. Penn captured the final bout at 174 as Joe Heyob used a second period three point near fall and a third period reversal to hold off Marshall Peppelman 7-4
The Mountain Hawks return to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Sunday to face No. 22 Rider at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by visiting the Grace Hall ticket office prior to the match.
"This is one of the best teams they've had," Santoro said of Rider. "I know they're excited to come in and compete tomorrow. They're going to come hard and we're going to have to be ready for them."
