Late surge lifts Edinboro to win over Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- Edinboro closed out what started as a tight match at 25th-ranked Rider with wins in the last four matches and six of the last seven for a 22-10 victory. The Fighting Scots have now won 20 straight Eastern Wrestling League matches dating back to the end of the 2012-13 season. Edinboro is now 5-4 and 3-0 in the EWL. The Broncs suffered their first loss of the season while falling to 6-1 and 2-1, respectively.

The match started at 149 lbs., with tenth-ranked Patricio Lugo winning a 3-1 decision over Jesse Rodgers. Lugo improved to 22-6 with the win.

Rider claimed wins in the next two matches, starting with B.J. Clagon's (13-5) 7-3 decision over Chase Delande (15-13) at 157 lbs. The 165 lb. match was the feature bout of the night, featuring 17th-ranked Austin Matthews against fifth-ranked Chad Walsh of Rider. A year ago, the two split a pair of matches while competing at 157 lbs., with Walsh winning the dual and Matthews prevailing in the EWL championship. This time, Walsh (19-2) prevailed with an 8-4 decision over Matthews (12-5).

Ty Schoffstall would tie the match up at 6-6 with a 12-8 decision over Wayne Stinson (15-9) at 174 lbs., as the redshirt junior improved to 13-7. Edinboro would regain the lead at 9-6 as 19th-ranked Dakota Geer (22-6) won a 7-2 decision at 184 lbs. over Michale Fagg-Daves (13-11).

Rider's Ryan Wolfe (10-4), ranked 14th at 197 lbs., picked up what would be the last win for the Broncs with a technical fall over Gordon Truesdale. Truesdale was filling in for Dylan Reynolds.

While Edinboro would win the final four matches, it didn't come easy, as two of the four went into tiebreakers. Billy Miller gave Edinboro the lead for good at 12-11 with a 4-1 decision in tiebreaker over Mauro Correnti at heavyweight. Miller rode out Correnti in the first 30-second tiebreaker period. Correnti then chose neutral, with Miller registering a clinching takedown. Ranked 11th at heavyweight, Miller is now 23-8.

Sean Russell, ranked ninth at 125 lbs., followed with an 8-2 decision over J.R. Wert (10-7) to improve to 24-5 while giving the Fighting Scots a 15-11 lead.

Needing a win to clinch the match, 18th-ranked Korbin Myers gutted out a 4-3 decision in two tiebreakers over Anthony Cefolo (13-8) at 133 lbs. He won thanks to a riding time advantage. The redshirt freshman is now 23-8.

Nate Hagan (12-6) made that win anticlimactic as he put an exclamation point on the victory with a 9-1 major decision over Evan Fidelibus (9-7) at 141 lbs. Rider was also deducted a point during that match due to a second bench warning.

The Fighting Scots continue their two-match swing on Sunday, January 22 at George Mason.
