Holding, Wicks welcomed into Iowa State Athletics Hall

    Arthur Holding

Two past Cyclone wrestling greats -- Arthur Holding, and Reg Wicks -- were among the honorees inducted into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend in Ames.

Both men were NCAA champions, separated by 40 years. Holding won the 135-pound title at the 1928 NCAAs ... while Wicks was 168-pound champ at the 1968 NCAAs.

With their inductions, the ISU Athletics Hall of Fame has welcomed at least one wrestler each of the past 20 years since the Hall was first established in 1997 ... for a total of 33 former Cyclone wrestlers and coaches.

Wrestling for the Cyclones in the late 1920s, Arthur Holding was a man of firsts. He became Iowa State's first NCAA champion, winning the 135-pound crown in his home gym at the first-ever NCAA wrestling championships. Holding was also the first three-time conference champ in school history, winning three consecutive titles (1927, 1928, 1929) at the Missouri Valley Conference championships ... and was a member of Iowa State's first conference championship team in 1929. He was also the first Cyclone wrestling Olympian, competing at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Holding finished his Iowa State career with an undefeated record.

    Reg Wicks
Reg Wicks made a name for himself as a Cyclone in the late 1960s. He won the 168-pound title at the 1968 NCAAs at Penn State. The Decorah, Iowa native was a member of Cyclone teams that placed second, third and second at the NCAAs the three seasons he was on the team. Wicks was also a two-time finalist at the prestigious Midlands post-Christmastime tournament, winning a title in 1967. He became head wrestling coach at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1988-2000, leading his Navy teams to a 173-60-5 overall record. In addition to the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame, Wicks was welcomed into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in Cresco in 1998, and the Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005.

Along with Holding and Wicks, other past Cyclone athletes also welcomed into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend include Mark Diab (men's gymnastics), Dan McCarney (football), Jamaal Tinsley (men's basketball), Erin Woods (softball), Megan Taylor (women's basketball) and Raf Wyns (track and field/cross country).
