In Hofstra's first match on Saturday, against Old Dominion, the Pride continued their trend of the weekend by dropping its first two matches by forfeiting both for an early 12-0 deficit. But fourth-ranked senior Jon Masa at 149 and sophomore Joe Rovelli at 184 each tallied tech fall victories and junior James Strouse posted a major decision at 157 pounds as Hofstra won the next six matches to take a commanding 23-12 lead. Adam Wright of ODU edged Chris Weidman 3-2 at 197 pounds but Pride junior heavyweight Jon Andriac tallied a 1-0 victory over John Dolida to end the match.
In the Pride's second match of the day, against Drexel, Hofstra once again forfeited the first two matches at 125 and 133. This time, the Pride captured the next seven matches to erase the 12-0 deficit and take a 37-12 advantage into the final match. After sophomore Charles Griffin won by injury default at 141 and Jon Masa pinned Chris Renninger in 2:54 to tie the match at 12, James Strouse won by decision at 157 and freshman Alton Lucas pinned Scott Hunter in 2:36 at 165. Joe Rovelli would win a major decision at 184 between two forfeit victories by Mike Patrovich at 174 and Chris Weidman at 197. Chris Cowen of Drexel pinned Jon Andriac in 3:30 to close out the match.
Hofstra's third match of the day was against host George Mason. Joe Coughlin gave the Patriots the leg up with a 13-4 major decision over Jon Fennell at 125. After the Pride forfeited at 133 to give George Mason a 10-0 lead, Hofstra captured the next eight matches to cruise to victory. Junior John Manarte started the Pride off with a pin of Chris Cartella in 1:48 at 141 pounds. Masa then tallied a tech fall (16-0) over Robert Henry to give the Pride an 11-10 lead. Strouse blanked Mitch Webster 9-0 for a major decision at 157 and Alton Lucas decisioned Tyler Tisdell 5-1 to boost the Pride lead to 18-10. Juniors Chris Vondruska at 174, Chris Weidman at 197 and Jon Andriac at heavyweight each posted decisions and sophomore Joe Rovelli had a forfeit win as the Pride posted its 43rd consecutive conference victory.
The event, which was held for the fourth consecutive year at George Mason, featured all eleven CAA teams. Hofstra and Rider, which did not face each other at the CAA Duals, were the only teams to go undefeated in the two-day affair. The Pride posted a 5-0 mark while the Broncs were 4-0-1. Old Dominion was 3-1-1, George Mason was 3-2, Sacred Heart was 2-2, Boston University and Campbell were each 2-3, Drexel was 1-2, Wagner and James Madison were each 1-4, and Binghamton was 0-3.
In round three on Saturday, George Mason shut out Wagner, 53-0, Hofstra defeated ODU 26-15, Drexel beat Campbell 36-12 and Rider cruised past Binghamton 43-10. In the most competitive match of the third round, Boston U. built an 18-7 lead against James Madison, and held on for an 18-17 victory despite a furious comeback in the final three weight classes by the Dukes.
Round four results include a 27-18 George Mason victory over Boston U., an 18-18 tie between Rider and ODU, as well as victories by both Hofstra and Sacred Heart. Trailing nearly the entire match, Campbell came back to defeat Wagner 22-20 with a major decision by John Fennell over John Cichon (12-3) in the final match of the meet at the heavyweight class.
The fifth and final round of the duals included victories by Hofstra over George Mason (33-10), ODU over Boston U. (34-10), Rider over JMU (36-9) and Sacred Heart over Campbell (48-6). Wagner picked up its first CAA victory of the season, pulling out a close one against Binghamton 19-13.
The Pride will close out its 2005-06 home schedule at Hofstra Arena this Wednesday, January 25 when they host the Quakers of the University of Pennsylvania at 7 p.m.
