    Hofstra downs Princeton

Princeton, NJ -- Zach Clemente, Tyler Banks and P.J. Gillespie each recorded wins by fall to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 33-11 victory over the Princeton Tigers at Dillon Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. Hofstra, which won its fourth straight match and ninth in the last 10 matches, improves to 13-4-1. The Tigers fall to 4-12-0.

The Pride, which captured eight of the 10 matches, won the first four matches of the contest to take a 15-0 lead. Starting at 125 pounds, sophomore Steve Bonanno won his fourth straight match with a 3-2 decision, on the riding time point, over 18th-ranked Garrett Frey to improve to 21-10. Fourth-ranked senior Lou Ruggirello (25-3), who won his 11th straight match, posted more than five minutes of riding time in a 9-3 victory over Richard Krop at 133 pounds. Junior Vince Varela improved to 18-11 on the season with an 8-3 decision over Zachary Bintliff at 141. Clemente, who notched his first pin of the season at 149 pounds to improve to 13-12 on the year, led 8-0 in the match with Gregory Ott before pinning him at the 4:32 mark of the contest.

Princeton got on the board at 157 where Daniel Kolodzik posted a 16-0 tech fall win over Pride sophomore Matt Spataro (7-15), who moved up a class from 149 pounds to cut the deficit to 15-5.

But sophomore Tyler Banks (18-14), who moved up a class to 165 from his usual 157, pinned Seth Hazleton in 2:58 at 165 and junior P.J. Gillespie, who bumped up to 174 from 165, pinned Andrew Lowry in 4:32 to improve to 23-6 on the year and boost the Pride lead to 27-5.

The Tigers closed the gap by six at 184 as Michael Erdman pinned sophomore Pat Murphy (0-9) in 1:56. Murphy was filling in for Ben Clymer, who was sitting out the match after being slightly injured in the Pride’s match against Rider last Wednesday. Hofstra closed out the match with decision victories by freshman Matt Loew (12-21), who won his fourth straight match at 197 pounds with a 7-5 victory over Daniel Santoro, and sophomore Paul Snyder (21-14) edged Charles Fox, 3-2 on the riding time point at 285 pounds.

The Pride close out their regular season dual match schedule on Tuesday, February 22 when they host the Black Knights of Army at the Mack Sports Complex in the make-up of the postponed (snow) January 26th contest. Match time is 7 p.m.
