Harvard snaps skid with victory over Ivy foe Columbia

NEW YORK -- Harvard wrestling (2-8, 2-5 EIWA, 1-3 Ivy) snapped a five-match skid with a 25-13 victory over Ivy League foe Columbia (7-6, 7-3 EIWA, 2-4) in a Saturday afternoon EIWA dual match in the Big Apple.

First-year Beau Bayless set the tone for the Crimson, beginning the day with a pin of the Lions' Joe Manchio at 125 pounds to give Harvard the early 6-0 lead. But Columbia clawed its way back to a tie with back-to-back decision at 133 and 141 pounds.

Senior Aaron Kruk, who earned his first dual victory of the season two weeks ago against Princeton, picked up his second. At 149 pounds, Kruk got the better of Columbia's Andy Garr, battled to a tight, 2-1 decision and started string of three straight bout victories for the Crimson.

Moving to the 157-pound weight class, fellow senior Hunter Ladnier registered his second technical fall of the season, with the 18-3 technical fall over David Berkovich. Improving to 2-0 in the technical fall category, Ladnier is currently tied with Michael Jaffe as the only two wrestlers to register technical falls in the dual season.

Riding a four-match win-streak heading into Saturday's matinee with the Lions, No. 16 Philip Conigliaro stretched it to five matches with a 12-4 major decision to increase the Crimson lead to 18-6.

After dropping the 174-weight class by major decision, fellow first-year Mike Doggett sealed the victory for Harvard, battling Joe Franzese to a 2-1 decision to put the Crimson up 21-10. First-year No. 10 Yaraslau Slavikouski closed out the 12-point win a dominating 9-0 major decision over Dan Conley.
