George Mason defeats VMI, SIU Edwardsville

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The George Mason wrestling team won a pair of duals on Saturday to finish the weekend unbeaten, recording a 21-15 win over SIU Edwardsville and a 26-18 victory over VMI at Cormack Hall in Lexington, Va.

Mason (4-7, 1-1 EWL) won the first five bouts against SIU Edwardsville in the first dual of the day to take a commanding 18-0 match score lead.

Junior Ibrahim Bunduka (9-0) remained unbeaten, and in his first match of the afternoon posted a 21-15 decision over Cougars senior Freddie Rodriguez at 125-pounds. Freshman Lio Quezada (11-12) then earned a 7-4 decision at 133-pounds over SIUE sophomore Joe Antonelli.

Sophomore Tejon Anthony (13-7) picked up a 7-2 decision at 141-pounds and senior Sahid Kargbo (19-1) followed with a 5-2 decision at 149-pounds to give the Patriots a 12-0 match score advantage.

Freshman Matthew Raines (7-12) then pinned SIUE junior Karsten Van Velsor in his 157-pound bout to increase the Mason lead to 18-0.

After the Cougars won matches at 165 and 174 pounds, sophomore Austin Harrison (2-6) put the Patriots back on track, winning his second bout of the weekend, a 3-0 decision over SIUE sophomore Jake Godinez at 184-pounds.

In the second dual of the afternoon, Mason earned victories in the first four bouts against VMI. Bunduka won by forfeit, Quezada by fall, Anthony picked up a decision and Kargbo registered a technical fall to give the Patriots a 20-0 match score lead over the Keydets.

VMI claimed the next five matches to cut the Mason match score lead to 20-18.

The match was decided in the heavyweight division, where sophomore Matthew Voss (11-9) rebounded from a loss earlier in the day, cementing the win for the Patriots with a pin against Keydets freshman Thomas Shea-Roop in the third period.

Mason has won its last five duals against VMI. The Patriots went 3-0 over the weekend, including a 30-6 win at Davidson on Friday.

The Patriots are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 15 when they host Cleveland State in an Eastern Wrestling League matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Recreation and Athletic Complex.
