Gardner-Webb uses bonus points to roll past The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Gardner-Webb picked up bonus points in all six of its individual wins Saturday afternoon -- including three pins -- to power past The Citadel, 31-13, in its second SoCon match in as many days.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (5-3, 2-1 SoCon) bounced back quickly, getting back-to-back pins from Landon LoAlbo at 125 pounds and Philip Anderson at 133 pounds. LoAlbo put Charles Kearney to the mat in 2:57 and Anderson just bettered that time – pinning Andrew Szalwinski in 2:53 for an early 12-0 team lead.

The Citadel (1-7, 0-2 SoCon) rallied, getting three consecutive decisions to cut the lead down to 12-9. Aaron Walker's narrow 4-3 decision over Ryan Mosley at 157 pounds followed a 7-4 win by Douglas Gudenburr at 141 pounds and a 5-1 decision for Tyler Buckiso at 149 pounds.

Tyler Marinelli broke momentum with a dominant performance, taking a 16-4 major decision over Jason Carr at 165 pounds. It was the Jefferson, Ga., sophomore's dual win in as many tries this season and improved his overall season mark to 11-3 (3-0 SoCon).

Austin Trott stepped onto the mat with a 7-0 dual record intact on Saturday -- and an eight-match win streak in SoCon dual action. The Kingsland, Ga., standout continued his roll, pinning Martin Duane in just 1:29 in the 174-pound matchup.

Trott has now won 14 of his last 15 SoCon dual matches, dating back to the 2014-2015 season.

Hunter Gamble bounced back from a tough defeat Friday night in style, putting on a clinic in an 18-2 tech fall performance against Chandler Sambets. Gamble – ranked 17th nationally – improved to 13-3 overall (2-1 SoCon) with that effort.

The Citadel got its final team points on the board with a major decision at 197 pounds, but heavyweight Boyce Cornwell returned the favor, shutting out Joseph Bexley by an 8-0 score for a major decision – and the final margin of victory.

Gardner-Webb will remain on the road for its next match, traveling to Boone, N.C., to take on top-25 foe Appalachian State on Tuesday night (Jan. 24) at 7:00 pm.
