Thiel opened an 8-3 lead three matches into the affair with major decisions at 125 and 141. Mike Sanders (Albion, N.Y./Albion) sandwiched an 8-4 victory over Jeff Langdon at 133 in between the two losses.
Gannon began to take control during the 149-pound match. Ted Hoag (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) began the rally with a 16-3 major decision over Ben Mellring, bringing the Golden Knights within one point of the lead.
Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) then recorded Gannon's lone pin of the night at 157, taking down Devon Todd. The pin put Gannon in front for the first time at 13-8 and improved McKendree's record to 13-3.
Thiel momentarily stopped the bleeding with a victory at 165, but Gannon put the match out of reach with three consecutive wins to seal the victory.
Mike Cavalier (Newbury, Ohio/Newbury) earned a 6-2 decision at 174. Erie natives Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) and Jon Wentz (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) then posted victories in the next two battles. Scavella moved to 18-12 overall and 2-0 in dual matches with a 5-0 shutout at 184. Wentz then clinched the victory with a 25-10 technical fall in front of the home crowd. He moved to 9-2 overall while capturing his first career dual victory.
Thiel recorded a pin in the final match at heavyweight, accounting for the final 24-17 score.
Gannon improved to 2-1 with its second consecutive dual victory. Thiel dropped to 2-4. The Golden Knights return to action Saturday, January 20 at the East Coast Duals hosted by Pitt-Johnstown.
