Future Northwestern wrestlers win state title

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Robert Kellogg (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) won a 160-pound Iowa state title to become the second future Northwestern Wildcat to capture a state title this season. The senior signed a National Letter of Intent in the fall and will compete for the Wildcats starting in 2007-08.

"Robert a guy that demands a lot out of himself and you could see that in his final match," assistant coach Andrew Pariano said. "We can't wait to work with him so that he can accomplish his collegiate goals of winning Big Ten and NCAA Championships."

Kellogg picked up the 174th win of his career and improved his season record to 53-0 when he won the 160-pound title Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Kellogg became the first wrestler in Sioux City North history win a championship. He dominated his semifinal match, cruising to a 12-1 win, before taking a 2-0 decision in the finals.

"The Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament is an outstanding event," Pariano said. "You know that you are in a state that appreciates wrestling the moment you set foot in Wells Fargo Arena. Robert handled the pressure really well and came away with a 2-0 victory."

Fellow signee Mike Benefiel (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic) recently became the ninth wrestler in Illinois history to win four state titles. He also set the Illinois wins record with 195 victories.

Ben Kuhar (Concord Twp., Ohio/St. Edward) also signed a National Letter of Intent in the fall to join Northwestern for the 2007-08 campaign.
