Fresno State bounces back with dominant 41-6 win at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Bouncing back from a tough defeat at CSU Bakersfield earlier in the day, the No. 24 ranked Fresno State Wrestling team won nine of 10 matches at Cal Poly to defeat the Mustangs, 41-6 on Saturday evening at the Recreation Center.

Fresno State (9-7) picked up seven bonus point wins getting falls from redshirt freshman Gary Joint at 133 pounds and sophomore heavyweight AJ Nevills while Khristian Olivas received a forfeit at 149 pounds. The 'Dogs also got a technical fall from redshirt freshman 184-pounder Jackson Hemauer and major decisions from Chris Deloza (141 lbs.), Isaiah Hokit (165 lbs.) and Dominic Kincaid (174 lbs.).

With the win, the Bulldogs assure themselves of a winning dual meet record in its only their second year back on the mat as they are now two matches over .500 with one final dual remaining on Feb. 17 at home against Oklahoma.

    How It Happened
With the dual getting started at 157 pounds, Wright won a hard-fought battle over redshirt freshman Brawley Lamer, 4-3 as a third period takedown proved to be the difference for the Dinuba native giving the 'Dogs a early 3-0 lead.

Back-to-back major decisions from Isaiah Hokit and Kincaid pushed the 'Dogs ahead 11-0 before Hemauer went to work on Willem DeBoer at 184 pounds notching his fourth technical fall of the campaign, 15-0.

The match of the dual came at 197 pounds as it was the lone bout to pit two ranked wrestlers as the 'Dogs No. 13 Josh Hokit faced No. 17 Tom Lane. Leading by a slim 2-1 margin after the first period, Hokit escaped in the second period and then got a quick takedown to start the third to take a 5-1 lead as Lane escaped, but one final takedown by Hokit ended any hope for Lane as the win moved the Bulldogs' winning streak to nine.

Nevills was able to take down and quickly turn Samuel Aguilar at heavyweight to extend the lead to 25-0 and after the Mustangs' lone win, the 'Dogs got a fall from Joint, a major decision by Deloza and Olivas' forfeit to end the dual.

    Quotes

    Head Coach Troy Steiner

On the 'Dogs split today with a win at Cal Poly after falling at CSU Bakersfield
"I am not very happy with our match earlier today and I do not feel like we came out ready to wrestle and I don't care who are going against at this level, you have to be ready to go. You have to know what you are going after when you step on the mat. The guys came in feeling good after last weekend and you have to take care of the little things and get ready to go again, because if you are don't, anyone can take you out. We did a good job though bouncing back tonight and wrestling more of a style I like to see, but I won't forget the first one against Bakersfield."

    On wrestling outdoors at Bakersfield.....
"It is a little different and you have to get used to the mat because it is a little softer on the grass, but it is like that way for both teams and can't use that as an excuse. You have to make adjustments quick and I don't think we did that at Bakersfield and you have to go out and take control of the match and we did that better against Cal Poly."

On finding success against Cal Poly.....
"We came out attacking and looking to put points on the board. They were looking for turns and to control the match and action. You give the other guy hope and then you will be in a dog fight."

On the Red Wave traveling to both of today's duals.....
"It is awesome to see the Red Wave out here supporting us and we appreciate it and we want you there next week when Oklahoma comes to town. They are a tough team and we got a week to prepare and get ready to go."

    Redshirt freshman 157-pounder Jacob Wright

On getting a pair of wins today to improve to 21-8 on the season....
"It always feels great to get your hand raised. I wish I could have done more in the first dual, but I look to keep building as we head toward the end of the season here."

On bouncing back tonight against Cal Poly....
"I thought we bounced back well and had a tough one in Bakersfield, but that just shows how tough our team is and we like to score points and make it exciting."

On wrestling two duals in the same day....
"It is tough and a quick turnaround, but you get food back in your body and rest and get ready to go back and dominant another guy."

    Notes
