Rutgers posts EIWA win over Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Rutgers wrestling team defeated Brown University, 18-16, on Jan. 20, recording its fourth Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) victory of the season.

The Scarlet Knights (5-3, 4-2 EIWA) split bouts with the Bears (1-5, 1-1 EIWA), but wins from Jack Barrett (Metuchen, N.J.), Jamie Lijo (Stanhope, N.J.) and Matt Pletcher (Eastampton, N.J.) sealed the conference win for RU.

The match began at the 174-pound weight class where Mike Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) got Rutgers off to a 3-0 lead with an 8-2 decision win over Chris Musser.

After Brown won a major decision at 184 pounds to take a 4-3 edge, Lamar Brown (Red Bank, N.J.) won a 9-4 decision at 197 pounds, giving RU a 6-4 lead. In the next four bouts, the Scarlet Knights would drop consecutive decisions, giving Brown a 16-6 lead heading into the final three weight classes.

At 149 pounds, Barrett won a 7-2 decision over Brown's Lenny Marandino, cutting the lead to 16-9. Lijo, who was leading in his bout at 157 pounds, posted a win over Savid Saadeh due to injury default. The six points cut the Bears' lead to one (16-15) before the final match. In the 165-pound bout, Pletcher won a tight 2-1 decision over Bran Crudden to lift the Scarlet Knights to the win.

RU will host NYU, Boston University and Delaware State on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the College Avenue Gymnasium. Competition will begin at noon.
