    Hofstra extends win streak to 7, remains undefeated in EIWA

    HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Hofstra and Harvard split 10 matches but the Pride scored bonus points in three of their wins in 20-17 victory in the first of two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association matches Sunday at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Pride dominated Brown in the second match, 29-6, and won eight of the 10 weight classes.

    Hofstra improved to 10-5 overall and 6-0 in the EIWA with the wins and extended its win streak to seven matches. Harvard fell to 2-9 overall and 2-6 in league action while Brown is 2-9 overall and 2-8 in the EIWA.

    In the opening match against Harvard, which started at 174 pounds, the Pride jumped out to a 14-0 lead as Sage Heller scored a first period tech fall over Michael Bausano, Charles Small major decisioned Michael Doggett at 184 and Trey Rogers followed with a 24-9 tech fall against Evan Callahan at 197 pounds.

    The Crimson got on the board at 285 as Harvard's 10th-ranked Yaraslau Slavikouski defeated Zachary Knighton-Ward by a 3-2 decision. A third period escape from a bottom starting position proved to be the difference in the match. However, Dylan Ryder got those points back at 125 with a 7-0 decision against Beau Bayless.
    Harvard won consecutive decisions at 133 and 141 make the score 17-9 with three weights remaining. Reece Heller scored an important 4-0 decision to put the Pride up 11, 20-9, with two weights to go. Hunter Ladnier, who is ranked 30th by The Open Mat, decisioned Hofstra's Holden Heller by a 6-0 score to make it 20-12. Philip Conigliaro, ranked 19th by Intermat, scored a technical fall at 165 in the final match of the dual.

    In the second match of the day, Sage Heller started the match once again and fell behind 4-0 early in the first period before rallying back. The match entered the third period tied at six before the Pride junior 174-pounder scored a takedown with 14 seconds left to take the lead in an 8-7 win. Small followed the Heller win with a decision of his own, 11-5, over Aaron Wolk as the Pride built a 6-0 lead. Rogers extended the Pride lead at 197 with a 3-1 decision over Nino Bastianelli.

    Knighton-Ward ended the string of decision victories with a win by fall in 4:17 over James Valentino. The Pride 285-pounder scored a hard takedown, slamming Valentino to the mat before getting the pin for a 15-0 lead. Ryder scored a 6-1 decision at 125 to make it an 18-0 lead.

    Justin Hoyle rallied at 133 pounds to defeat Brown's Charlie Faber, xxx-xxx. Faber led 5-2 in the early in second period before Hoyle scored a late period takedown and an escape to start the third that tied the score at five. Neither wrestler scored the rest of the period to force overtime. Hoyle would get the win, 7-5, after scoring a takedown midway through the sudden victory period.

    Brown ended the shutout bid at 141 pounds as James Pawelski scored a 5-3 decision over the Pride's Vinny Vespa in a hard-fought contest. Ricky Cabanillas extended Brown's win streak to two weights at 149 with an 11-9 decision over Reece Heller. The match went back and forth and was tied at nine late in the final period when Cabanillas scored a takedown for the win.

    Holden Heller put Hofstra back on track at 157 pounds, jumping out to an 8-3 lead after two periods. The Pride sophomore scored a trio of third period takedowns and had riding time for the 15-5 major decision. Ricky Stamm put the cherry on top of the Hofstra victory with a major decision over Matthew Lattanze, 14-2.

    Hofstra will be back in action next Saturday at home versus Sacred Heart with a start time of 2 p.m.
