Hamlin was rested in Lehigh’s first match of the Virginia Duals, a 33-6 win over UNC-Greensboro, but made the most of his first action of the day against the Cowboys. The Vermont native took the two-time Wyoming All-American down twice, once in the first period and once late in the second to build a 5-4 lead. Hamlin was taken down early in the third period, but escaped to take a one point lead and was able to hold off LeBlanc from there.
With his win, Hamlin is believed to be the first Lehigh wrestler to defeat the No. 1 wrestler in the country at his weight class since Jon Trenge knocked off Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State at 197 in 2005.
On Saturday, Hamlin won decisions over Michigan’s Hunter Collins and Kent State’s Casey Newburg, with both victories coming by 10-4 scores. He was one of four Mountain Hawks to win at least three matches without a loss at the Virginia Duals, joining freshmen Frank Cagnina and Austin Meys and junior Zach Rey.
For the season, Hamlin is now 17-1 with the lone loss coming to Wisconsin’s Trevor Rutt in the semifinals of the Midlands Championships. Hamlin went on to place third in the event.
Hamlin is the second Lehigh wrestler to be named EIWA Wrestler of the Week this season
Lehigh went 2-2 at the Virginia Duals to place fourth in the national college division. The Mountain Hawks will return to the mats on Saturday when they travel to Annapolis, Maryland to face EIWA rival Navy.
