    Binghamton topples LIU

The Binghamton University wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts, four of which had bonus points, en route to a 32-6 victory over LIU Thursday evening in Vestal. No. 4 Lou DePrez highlighted the team's strong match, picking up his second straight pin to open the season.

"We wrestled well today and had some big wins by bonus points," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "We also had several close matches that we were able to win. The guys have great belief in themselves and believe that they shouldn't be losing to anybody. If we can keep winning the close ones, we are going to have a really good season."

    Highlights
  • Jacob Nolan kicked things off at 174 pounds, and would not relinquish a point to LIU's James Langan. An early takedown and four back points in the first carried him to a 9-0 major decision.

  • DePrez dominated from the start at 184 pounds, leading 6-0 after just 20 seconds. DePrez was able to turn LIU's T.J. Frandon, putting him away in the final seconds of the period.

  • Sam DePrez notched his first victory of 2021, capitalizing on a few early takedowns to get an 8-1 decision, nearly getting the major decision in the final seconds.

  • At 125 pounds, Micah Roes won his second straight matchup, taking an 8-0 major decision. The freshman matched Nolan's shutout, as he picked up over two minutes of ride time.

  • In the next matchup, LIU's Devin Matthews used a strong second period to tie things up late with Anthony Sobotker. In a tight third period, Sobotker was able to put together an impressive takedown in the final minute and ride out Matthews to get the 6-4 decision.

  • Similarly to Sobotker, Trampe also found himself down in his matchup. Trailing 4-0 in the first, Trampe would go on to shut out the Sharks' Drew Witham the rest of the way, and used ride time to propel him to his second win of the season.

  • At 149 pounds, Michael Zarif got ahead early against Chris Gomez, and held on for a 7-6 win. A late escape in the final seconds of the second period proved to be the difference for Zarif, who is 2-0 this season.

  • Brevin Cassella notched the dual's final victory for the Bearcats via forfeit.

  • In extra matches, Dane Heberlein won in convincing fashion. Leading 4-0, he was able to pin his LIU's Adam Barker just over two minutes in. Nolan added another major decision in the bout's final matchup.
