    Binghamton takes down Rider

The Binghamton University wrestling team wasted no time making an imprint on the 2021 season, rattling off back-to-back pins to open the match in a 27-20 victory over Rider at the West Gym in Vestal. Six victories in total, highlighted by pins from Micah Roes, Anthony Sobotker and Lou DePrez helped vault the Bearcats over the nationally ranked Broncs (InterMat).

"That start was electric," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. To get off to a start like that, it's everything. We proved we're a dangerous team tonight."

    Highlights
Roes kicked things off at 125 pounds, and trailed early against Jonathan Tropea. The true freshman fell behind 4-2 after the first period, but regained the lead with a takedown and back points in the second. Roes had Tropea on his back for a large portion of the third, and notched the pin in the final seconds of the period.

Leading 6-0 following the pin by Roes, Sobotker made quick work of Richie Koehler. Leading 2-0, Sobotker ignited his team with a pin just 1:10 into the first.

At 141 pounds, No.19 Zack Trampe found himself in a tight battle with Rider's McKenzie Bell. Tied at three in the third and starting the period down, Trampe got a reversal and was strong on top en route to a 6-4 decision.

Michael Zarif made it four straight wins for the Bearcats with an 8-7 decision over Wyatt McCarthy. Tied at seven after two, Zarif was able to escape in the third and fend off McCarthy to pick up his first career dual victory.

At 165 pounds, Brevin Cassella joined Roes and Sobotker with his first win as a Bearcat. A bout that did not see a takedown, Cassella remained consistent on the attack, resulting in two stall points in his favor. He picked up a 3-2 decision.

At 184 pounds, No. 4 DePrez sealed the win with a pin of his own. Controlling the bout 7-1, DePrez was able to put George Walton on his back in the second period.

The match had two bonus matches, which the Bearcats split with Rider. Tyler Martin also registered his first collegiate victory, earning a 5-3 decision over Travis Layton.
