Edinboro wins final three matches to top Bloomsburg

EDINBORO, Pa. -- 11th-ranked Edinboro won the final three bouts to rally from a late deficit and hand Bloomsburg a 23-16 defeat in an Eastern Wrestling League match taken in by close to 1,000 fans at McComb Fieldhouse on Friday night. With the win Edinboro is now 7-2 and 3-0 in the EWL, while Bloomsburg falls to 14-5 and 1-2 in the EWL.

The match had several swings, with Edinboro winning three of the first four matches to take a 12-3 lead, only to see the Huskies dominate the middle weights and claim a 16-12 lead.

That left it up to the upper weights to reclaim the lead, and they came through in flying colors. Vic Avery (left) would knot the match at 16-16 with an impressive 14-5 major decision over Sam Shirey (17-15) at 184 lbs. The freshman, now 19-10, led just 2-1 after one period, but tacked on an escape and two takedowns in the second period for a 7-2 lead. He would add two more takedowns in the third, but still needed a takedown to pick up bonus points. He would register his sixth takedown of the match with ten seconds remaining.

Chris Honeycutt (right) followed with another major decision, 16-6 over Richard Perry (25-9) at 197 lbs. The senior, ranked second by both Intermat and Amateur Wrestling News, did all of his scoring in the final two periods after a scoreless first period. He had two takedowns in the second period, along with a two escape and two penalty points for an 8-4 lead after two periods. He would add two more takedowns and three near-fall points in the final period to improve to 30-0 on the season and 120-20 for his career.

Honeycutt's victory gave the Scots a 20-16 advantage, and Ernest James capped the comeback with a 4-2 decision over Zac Walsh (18-12) at heavyweight. James would record a takedown midway through the first period, but a pair of Walsh escapes left the match tied at 2-2 entering the final period. James grabbed the lead with an escape and owned 1:12 in riding time. The sophomore is now25-8.

In one of the swing matches of the night, Sean Boylan (15-14) bested Kory Mines 6-1 at 125 lbs., thanks to first and second period takedowns. Mines is now 13-13.

Edinboro ran off three wins as its lower weights continued to impress. A.J. Schopp (left), ranked sixth by InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News at 133 lbs., improved to 30-3 with his 14th fall over Craig Barker (10-9) at 3:46. That puts him into a tie for eighth place in season falls.

Mitchell Port followed with a 4-2 decision over Derek Shingara (19-11) in another key swing bout at 141 lbs. Port, ranked 18th by InterMat and 20th by Amateur Wrestling News and now 22-6 with seven straight wins, fell behind a minute into the match on a Shingara takedown, but would escape to trail 2-1 after one period. He rode out Shingara in the second period to gain valuable riding time, then scored the winning points with a reversal at 1:26 of the third period. He owned 2:35 in riding time.

Dave Habat picked up his ninth straight win and 18th in the last 19 matches with a 6-2 decision over Bryce Busler (21-7) at 149 lbs. Habat led 2-1 after one period thanks to a takedown just ten seconds into the match. A Habat escape was the only scoring in the second period. Busler cut it to 3-2 early in the third period, but the escape came just after Habat secured riding time. A Habat takedown with ten seconds remaining sealed the match.

Bloomsburg would win the next three matches, beginning with Frank Hickman's 19-6 major decision over freshman Casey Fuller (18-16) at 157 lbs. Hickman, ranked fourth by Amateur Wrestling News and ninth by InterMat, improved to 24-3.

At 165 lbs., Kevin Hartnett (18-10) tied the match at 12-12 with a 9-5 decision over freshman Jesse Swink in a bout that wasn't decided until the final seconds. Swink trailed just 6-5 late in the match, and Hartnett scored a takedown at the buzzer and owned riding time.

Bloomsburg would take a 16-12 lead on 20th-ranked Mike Dessino's fall over Chris Hrunka (15-13) at 5:45 at 174 lbs. The match was tied at 2-2 heading into the third period before a Dessino reversal led to the fall as he improved to 23-8.

Edinboro has a quick turnaround, as the Fighting Scots head west on Saturday to face Cleveland State at 7 p.m. in another EWL match.
