The highlight of the match came at 149 lbs., as Patricio Lugo paired off against B.J. Clagon in a matchup of nationally-ranked wrestlers. Lugo, a true freshman, came in ranked 19th by InterMat, while Clagon, a redshirt sophomore who was the EWL freshman of the Year and earned All-American honors with a fifth place finish at Nationals, was ranked 17th. Lugo improved to 24-3, while Clagon is now 10-10.
Lugo would build an early lead and then hold off Clagon for an 8-6 decision. He jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one period, starting with a takedown 50 seconds into the match, followed by four near-fall points. A Clagon escape was the only point in the second period. Lugo began the third period with an escape, but Clagon's takedown with 1:48 to go cut the lead to 7-4. Lugo would escape at 1:14 for an 8-4 lead. Clagon would narrow the gap to 8-6 with a takedown with 25 seconds to go to end the scoring.
The next match was the most exciting match of the day and featured two more ranked wrestlers, although it did not go in Edinboro's way. Rider's Chad Walsh, ranked 20th by InterMat and the 2015 EWL champion, would rally for a 15-11 decision over ninth-ranked Austin Matthews at 157 lbs. Matthews, in his second match back after missing over a year with a knee injury, grabbed a 6-1 lead just over a minute in the match.
The redshirt sophomore had a takedown forty seconds into the bout, followed by two near-fall points ten seconds later. Walsh would escape, but Matthews recorded his second takedown at the 1:45 mark of the first period. The scoring was not over, however, Walsh followed with a reversal and two near-fall points to close to 6-5 before a Matthews escape made it 7-5 after one period.
Walsh accounted for all of the scoring in the second period with an escape and takedown for an 8-7 advantage. Matthews retook the lead at 9-8 with a reversal early in the third period, and the two then exchanged reversals for an 11-10 Matthews' lead with a minute remaining. Walsh would tie the match with a stalling point, then take a 12-11 lead with an escape with 45 seconds to go. He clinched the win with a takedown ten seconds later and picked up a point for riding time for a 15-11 decision. Matthews is now 1-1 while tasting defeat for the first time as a Fighting Scot. Walsh improved to 16-5.
The win at 157 lbs. gave Rider a 9-8 lead, but Edinboro would run off wins in the next three matches to go up 18-9. Casey Fuller improved to 21-5 with a 6-3 decision over Curt Delia (3-3) at 165 lbs. The redshirt senior pulled away with a pair of third-period takedowns after trailing 2-1 after two periods.
Patrick Jennings (19-11) followed with a 6-1 decision over Wayne Stinson (9-11) at 174 lbs. The redshirt senior posted takedowns in the second and third period after trailing 1-0 early in the second period.
Vic Avery, ranked second at 184 lbs., won a 17-4 major decision over Michale Fagg-Daves (13-9) for Edinboro's second win by bonus points. The redshirt senior is now 2-0 after registering five takedowns in the match. He led 2-0 after one period, and built the lead to 6-1 after two periods. In the third, he had three takedowns and four near-fall points at the buzzer.
Rider would win the final two matches by decision. Vince Pickett (17-11) had the lone takedown in his 197 lb. match with Ryan Wolfe (17-8), but Walsh used four near-fall points in the second period for a 4-3 decision. Pickett rode out Walsh in the third to gain riding time but could not turn Wolfe.
Billy Miller suffered a tough loss at heavyweight, dropping a 3-1 decision to Mauro Correnti (10-7) on a takedown at the buzzer. The redshirt freshmen fell to 22-6.
Edinboro's Sean Russell opened the match with a 24-8 technical fall at 5:39 over Zach Valcarce (2-7) at 125 lbs. The redshirt freshman is now 21-5 after taking down Valcarce ten times.
Rider won the next two bouts. At 133 lbs., Robert Deutsch (9-5) won a 6-1 decision over Anthony Rivera (6-9). Paul Kirchner (13-9) followed with a 13-7 decision over freshman Tyler Vath (7-11) at 141 lbs.
